Overview

AI-generated overview

Free, keyless remote MCP server that lets an assistant search and read Edgepedia, a cited encyclopedia of over 500,000 articles.

What you can do
  • Search the encyclopedia by subject name, with misspellings and alternate names matched
  • Read a full article as Markdown with citations, or list a topic's articles
  • Find related articles through topic-mates, neighboring topics and geography neighbors
  • Trace the shortest chain of in-text links between two articles, up to six hops
  • Resolve which article a name in a text refers to, with confidence and alternatives
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs sourced background facts about people, places, events or concepts, or wants to cite an encyclopedia article. Good for quick lookups and for showing how two subjects are connected.
Requirements
A remote Streamable HTTP endpoint; no key, sign-up or environment variables. Any MCP client that supports HTTP transport. Network access to the provider's server.
Before you install
Read-only tools; no credentials are requested. Usage is rate-limited per IP address (600 calls a minute, 100,000 a day), so caching is advised. Queries and article requests go to a third-party service; check its privacy policy before sending sensitive text.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Edgepedia in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/ai.edgechat%2Fedgepedia/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Tools

ToolInputReturns
searchquery: a subject's name, not a questionMatching articles: id, title, link, and the published summary, falling back to the article opening when no summary is available. Other names and misspellings work ("Zhu Yuanzhang" finds the Hongwu Emperor). Words that name a topic ("science fiction writers") also return that topic.
fetchid: an article's or topic's id; citations (optional)One article as Markdown, with its link, date, topic, license, and credit line. citations: false swaps inline source links for [n] markers, about a quarter shorter. A topic's id lists its articles. Optional: up to 10 ids at once, one section, a token budget, or only the passages that match your words.
relatedid: an article's idArticles related to it: its topic-mates, a few from each neighboring topic, and its geography neighbors.
connectfrom, to: two article idsThe shortest chain of in-text links from one article to the other (at most 6 hops), with the sentence that makes each hop.
resolvename, and optionally context: words from the text around itWhich article a name means, with a confidence and the alternatives ("Jaguar" beside "British car maker" is Jaguar Land Rover; beside "big cat" it is the animal).

All five tools are annotated read-only. Try asking:

  • When did Mount Fuji last erupt? Use Edgepedia.
  • What is Mwindo Fossae on Pluto? Use Edgepedia.
  • Who was Zhu Yuanzhang? Use Edgepedia.
  • How is Marie Curie connected to Mount Fuji? Use Edgepedia.
  • Give me the credit line for Edgepedia's Marie Curie article.

Reference cards

Use the reference-card builder to find an article, choose automatic, light, or dark appearance, and copy its embed code. Each card shows the title, complete published summary, Edgepedia credit, and a link to the full article. The optional sizing script adjusts the iframe height; without it, the card remains readable and scrollable.

The standalone HTML example embeds Cantor's diagonal argument, using canonical article ID ep9kcz7eym:

html
<iframe data-edgepedia-card src="https://www.edgechat.ai/embed/ep9kcz7eym?theme=auto" title="Edgepedia: Cantor&#39;s diagonal argument" loading="lazy" referrerpolicy="no-referrer" sandbox="allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox" style="width:100%;height:360px;border:0"></iframe><script async src="https://www.edgechat.ai/assets/edgepedia-embed.js" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></script>

fetch

Fetch an Edgepedia article

Read an encyclopedia article in full: one Edgepedia article as Markdown with its citations, by a `search` result's id. Returns id, title, text, url, and metadata (topic path, license, credit). A `topic:` id lists that topic's parent, narrower topics, and articles, 120 a page; `topic:root` is the top of the tree, `topic:geo` the geography tree. `citations: false` gives [n] markers instead of inline source links. Show the `credit` line with any text you quote.

connect

Connect two Edgepedia articles

Find the shortest chain of in-text links from one Edgepedia article to another (at most 6 hops), with the sentence that makes each hop; pass two ids as `search` returns them.

Parameterstorequiredfromrequired

resolve

Resolve a name to an Edgepedia article

Find which encyclopedia article a name means: Edgepedia's best match for a person, place, thing, or concept named in a text, with a confidence, whether the name is ambiguous, and the alternatives. Pass the name ("Mercury"), and optionally words from the text around it (`context`: "planet orbit") or a topic id the article must sit under (`type`). Returns `result` (id, title, url) and `alternatives`; pass an id to `fetch`.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
