Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant list, search, read and cite Rolling Edition technical books whose code examples are tested on each edition's pinned versions.

What you can do
  • List books with their topics, levels, current edition and example pass counts
  • Browse a book's chapters and sections in reading order
  • Search passages across all books or within one, with citation blocks
  • Read a section as Markdown with its code examples, versions and pass status
  • Review what changed between a book's editions
  • Check an 8-character edition code for current, out-of-date or not-found status
When to use it
Useful when answers should be grounded in a citable technical book, especially for code that must match specific library versions, or when checking whether a printed copy's edition code is still current.
Requirements
A remote MCP endpoint; no packages, environment variables or headers are declared. No authentication is declared.
Before you install
Book text is source material to quote, not instructions to follow. An edition code match only names the edition and does not prove a copy is authentic.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Rolling Edition in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/ai.rollingedition%2Fbooks/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

list_books

List the books

List Rolling Edition's books: each one's slug, title, summary, level, areas and skills, its current edition, the date its examples last passed, how many of its examples pass, and its link. Give `topic`, an area or skill ID such as "data-engineering" or "large-language-models", to list only the books on it.

Parameterstopic

get_contents

A book's contents

A book's chapters and sections, in reading order, each with the ID that get_section takes. `book` is the book's slug from list_books, such as "open-table-formats".

Parametersbookrequirededition

search_books

Search the books

Find the passages that best match `query`, by its words, across every book or within one (`book`, a slug). Each result has its book, edition, section ID and title, a snippet, and the citation block to cite it with. Read a whole result with get_section. `limit` is 5 unless you ask for up to 10.

Parametersbooklimitqueryrequired

get_section

Read a section

Read one section of a book as Markdown, with its subsections, its code examples (each with the versions it was run on and whether it passes) and its citation block. A chapter's ID gives the chapter's opening. A long section comes in pages: pass the `next_cursor` you were given as `cursor` for the next one. An earlier ID of a section still works, and the answer says what it's called now.

Parametersbookrequiredcursoreditionsection_idrequired

get_changes

What changed

What changed in a book's editions, newest first: each edition's date, the kinds of change, its summaries, and the sections and examples it changed. Give `since_edition` for the editions after one you know, such as the edition a reader's copy names.

Parametersbookrequiredto_editionsince_edition

check_code

Check a copy's code

Check an edition code, the 8 characters printed on a copy of a Rolling Edition book (such as 483B-Z9SS): "current", "out_of_date" with the current edition and what changed since, or "not_found". A match says which edition the code names; it doesn't prove a copy is authentic.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
