Overpass API on the full planet with history, plus geocoding and elevation. Needs an account.
Overview
Hosted Overpass MCP server that lets an assistant query full-planet OpenStreetMap data, geocode places and look up elevations.
- What you can do
- Run Overpass QL or XML queries against the whole OpenStreetMap planet, with counts, data date and paged results
- Find tested example queries from a cookbook of 99 queries
- Search places, addresses and points of interest by name, and reverse-geocode a point to an address
- Get point elevations and elevation profiles with distance, ascent and descent
- Check plan, monthly usage and data date
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant should answer questions about mapped real-world features — shops, streets, buildings, chargers, mountain huts — by area or distance, or needs geocoding and elevation alongside. The free plan suits evaluation and non-commercial projects; history queries need a paid plan.
- Requirements
- Remote Streamable HTTP endpoint; nothing to install. Either OAuth sign-in at the hosted URL, or a free overpass.ch account and API key passed in the X-API-Key header (or a bearer token, or in the URL path). Listing tools needs no key; tool calls do.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open overpass.ch in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.
Use with an agent
Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.
Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/ch.overpass%2Foverpass/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.Other MCP clients
Add this to your client's mcpServers config.

overpass.ch MCP server
Hosted Overpass API with an MCP server. AI assistants connected to it query OpenStreetMap data for the whole planet, find places by name, look up heights, and answer from current data.
The data covers every street, shop, building and place mapped in OpenStreetMap and is updated every minute. The Medium and Large plans can also query the map at a past date, back to September 2012.
This repository holds the documentation and the registry entry of the hosted server at https://api.overpass.ch/mcp (sign-in) and https://api.overpass.ch/v1/mcp (API key). There is nothing to install.

Setup
In Claude, add overpass.ch from the Claude directory. Claude Code, ChatGPT and other assistants that sign in take https://api.overpass.ch/mcp as a remote MCP server, then open overpass.ch for you to sign in (OAuth). The free plan works too.
Clients that do not sign in send an API key:
-
Create a free account and an API key at https://overpass.ch/signup.
-
Add the server to your assistant, either as a URL with the key in it:
or as
https://api.overpass.ch/v1/mcpwith the key in theX-API-Keyheader (orAuthorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY).
Transport: Streamable HTTP. Protocol versions 2026-07-28 and 2025-03-26 to 2025-11-25. Listing the tools does not need a key. Create a separate key for each assistant, so that you can revoke it on its own.
Claude (web, desktop and mobile apps)
Open overpass.ch in the Claude directory and add it, then sign in to overpass.ch and click Allow. In a Team or Enterprise organisation, an owner first adds it under Organization settings → Connectors.
With a key: Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. Name: overpass.ch. URL: the URL with your key. Authentication: No sign in.
ChatGPT
Open https://chatgpt.com/plugins, select + and Add custom MCP server. Enter a name, the URL https://api.overpass.ch/mcp under Connection, and OAuth as authentication. Confirm the warning, select Create as a plugin, then sign in to overpass.ch and click Allow. With a key: the URL with your key and no authentication. Your ChatGPT plan or workspace has to allow custom MCP servers.
Claude Code
Then type /mcp in Claude Code, select overpass and sign in to overpass.ch in the browser. With a key:
Cursor
~/.cursor/mcp.json, with the key in the environment variable OVERPASS_KEY:
VS Code
.vscode/mcp.json. VS Code asks for the key the first time and stores it:
Other clients
Other clients that speak MCP over Streamable HTTP take the URL with the key, or the URL without it and the X-API-Key header.
As an Agent Plugin
This repository is also an Agent Plugin: plugin.json and mcp.json add the server overpass at https://api.overpass.ch/mcp. On first use the client opens overpass.ch for you to sign in. A client that does not sign in can use https://api.overpass.ch/v1/mcp with the header X-API-Key instead.
Tools
All tools only read data. Overpass queries through MCP stop after 120 s at most.
Example questions
- How many pharmacies in Zürich are within 200 m of a tram stop?
- Which mountain huts in Valais lie above 2,500 m?
- List every EV charger in the canton of Bern with operator and power, as a table.
- How many cafés did Lausanne have in 2015, and how many today? (Medium and Large plans)
Plans
Tool calls count like the same calls of the REST API.
The free plan is for evaluation and development, and for personal, educational and non-profit projects; commercial use needs a paid plan. Every plan includes 100,000 geocoding requests a month. Prices exclude VAT, and a year costs ten months. Details: https://overpass.ch/pricing
FAQ
Do I need an API key? Yes, for tool calls. The free plan works. Listing the tools works without a key.
What happens when a result is very large? The answer says how many elements there were. The assistant can read the next part with offset, raise max_chars up to 200,000, or narrow the query (out count;, out center 50;, a smaller area).
How is this different from MCP servers that use overpass-api.de? The public server overpass-api.de allows about 100 queries a day for anything that runs regularly, refuses scripts without their own User-Agent and bans addresses after repeated 429 errors. overpass.ch identifies you by your API key, publishes its limits and tells the assistant how long to wait when it reaches one.
What is logged? Tool calls are logged like API requests: the id of the key, never the key, and queries only as a hash.

Score
40% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 daysRequired25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declaredRequired10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
