Your own computer's files from ChatGPT or Claude: folder rules, confirmations and undo.
Overview
A Claude Desktop extension that lets the assistant read, search, organize and edit files in folders you approve, with confirmations and 7-day undo.
- What you can do
- List, read and inspect files: browse folders, read text, PDF, DOCX and images, get file info and disk usage
- Search and find: search files by name or content and locate duplicate files
- Change files: write, edit, create folders, move and delete files within permitted folders
- Review and reverse: show folder rules, view change history and undo earlier changes
- Run ready-made tasks from the chat menu, such as tidying Downloads or finding duplicate photos
- When to use it
- Useful when you want Claude to tidy, find or reorganize files on your own computer rather than in a cloud drive, and you want guardrails: folder-level permissions, a confirmation window before risky actions, and undo.
- Requirements
- Installed as a Claude Desktop extension (an .mcpb bundle downloaded from the website or Releases page); the manifest lists a remote endpoint with OAuth sign-in. Building from source needs Node.js 22 or newer. Settings live in the extension panel or a local config file, with read and write folders, a confirmation threshold and a history retention period.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Desktop Steward in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.
Use with an agent
Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.
Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.desktopsteward%2Fdesktop-steward/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.Other MCP clients
Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

Desktop Steward
Safe hands for Claude on your computer. A free extension for Claude Desktop that lets Claude tidy, find and organize your files with plain folder rules, a confirmation window before anything risky, and undo for every change.
Website and download: https://desktopsteward.com
What it does
- Rules in plain words. You choose which folders Claude may read and which it may change. Everything else is invisible to it.
- Asks before anything risky. Deleting, replacing a file, or moving many files opens a confirmation window on your computer. The model cannot answer it.
- Undo for 7 days. Old versions are kept before a change; deleted files wait in a holding area;
undobrings them back. - Off limits, always. Passwords, keys, browser data, mail, system folders, and anything that runs on double-click. No terminal, no network, no telemetry.
- Ready-made tasks in the chat's + menu: tidy Downloads, find duplicate photos, free disk space, tidy the Desktop, find documents by topic, rename photos by date.
Read SECURITY.md for the threat model, including what it does not protect against.
Install
Download the .mcpb for your platform from the website or the Releases page and double-click it. Claude Desktop installs it like a browser extension. Press Save; the defaults are sensible.

Public core and the official bundle
This repository is the core of Desktop Steward: the file tools, the folder rules, the confirmation step and undo. Everything that touches your files is here and can be audited. The official bundle from desktopsteward.com is built from this core plus extras that are not in this repository: a local panel with Undo buttons, images-to-PDF, zip/unzip, opening files, remote access from the phone (Pro). The extras use the same rules, confirmations and undo as the core.
Build from source
Node.js 22 or newer. The bundle is platform-specific because the bundled search binary (ripgrep) is.
Configuration
Settings live in the Claude Desktop extension panel, or in ~/.desktop-steward/config.json:
Privacy
Desktop Steward reads only the folders you opened to it and keeps copies of changed or deleted files for undo in ~/.desktop-steward on your own computer (7 days by default). The core sends nothing anywhere and has no telemetry. Full policy: Privacy · Security model: Security · Contact: [email protected]
