Before you install
The connector logs in to your database as a role you choose, so its GRANT/REVOKE privileges cap what the assistant can do; use a read-only role unless writes are needed. The run_query action executes SQL statements and is off by default, but once enabled it can change or delete data. Database metadata and query results pass through a third-party hosted service. Access is controlled per account, so review which actions are enabled for each connected account.

What is MySQL MCP?

MySQL MCP is a remote Model Context Protocol server hosted by InsightfulPipe. Browse schemas, inspect tables, and run SQL against your own MySQL or MariaDB instance. Read vs. read-write is decided by the GRANT/REVOKE privileges on the role this connector logs in as.

Installation

Claude

  1. Copy the MCP Server URL: https://mysql.insightfulmcp.com/
  2. Open Claude Connectors Settings
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click Add custom connector
  4. Paste the URL and click Add
  5. Click Connect and sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked. Claude then lists the connector as connected.

ChatGPT

Custom MCP servers are added through ChatGPT's Developer mode. Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, and workspace admins may need to allow it.

  1. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT settings
  2. Create a new app for a remote MCP server and paste the URL: https://mysql.insightfulmcp.com/
  3. Sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked. The connection finishes as soon as you are signed in.
