Before you install
The server runs SQL against your database, so a read-write connection can change or delete data; destructive actions are off by default and should stay that way unless needed. Read versus write capability depends on the privileges of the database role the connector logs in as, so use a least-privilege role. Your database is accessed through a third-party hosted service, and usage requires a paid subscription.

Installation

What is PostgreSQL MCP?

PostgreSQL MCP is a remote Model Context Protocol server hosted by InsightfulPipe. Browse schemas and tables, inspect columns, run SQL, and read pg_stat insights against your own PostgreSQL database. Read vs. read-write is decided by the GRANT/REVOKE privileges on the role this connector logs in as.

Installation

Claude

  1. Copy the MCP Server URL: https://postgresql.insightfulmcp.com/
  2. Open Claude Connectors Settings
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click Add custom connector
  4. Paste the URL and click Add
  5. Click Connect and sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked. Claude then lists the connector as connected.

ChatGPT

Custom MCP servers are added through ChatGPT's Developer mode. Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, and workspace admins may need to allow it.

  1. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT settings
  2. Create a new app for a remote MCP server and paste the URL: https://postgresql.insightfulmcp.com/
  3. Sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked. The connection finishes as soon as you are signed in.
