Overview

AI-generated overview

Manusights is a remote MCP server that lets an assistant verify references, look up journal AI policies, and run pre-submission manuscript previews.

What you can do
  • Check references against Crossref, the DOI registry and Retraction Watch, with extra searches for records without a DOI
  • Look up a journal's recorded AI-use and disclosure rules with the official policy link and check date
  • Start a pre-submission preview from an attached manuscript file or from complete manuscript text
  • Read a preview or full review by review_id, polling while it is still processing
  • List the 20 most recent reviews on the account
When to use it
Useful before submitting a scientific paper: to catch retracted, corrected or mismatched citations, to see what a target journal allows regarding AI use, and to get a quick readiness verdict and main risks a reviewer may raise.
Requirements
A remote streamable HTTP endpoint at manusights.com/mcp; nothing to install. Reference checks and journal lookups work without an account; the review tools require OAuth sign-in (dynamic client registration) the first time they are used. File-based review needs a client that can pass the file's download URL.
Before you install
Reference checks send the references to Manusights, and a preview sends the manuscript text or file and saves the preview to the account, so unpublished work leaves your machine. Review tools require signing in. Matching a record only shows a reference exists, not that it supports the claim; a missing record may be a typo or registry gap rather than an invented paper. Figures are not reviewed from text.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Manusights in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.manusights%2Fmanusights/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

Manusights MCP server

Manusights checks a manuscript before submission. This remote MCP server lets an AI assistant check references for retractions and DOI mismatches, look up a journal's recorded AI-use rules, and start a pre-submission preview of a manuscript.

  • Server URL: https://manusights.com/mcp (streamable HTTP)
  • Registry name: com.manusights/manusights in the official MCP Registry
  • Sign-in: OAuth with dynamic client registration. Reference checks and journal lookups work without an account; the review tools ask you to sign in the first time you use them.

This repository holds the server's public description and setup notes, packaged as an Agent Plugins plugin: plugin.json (manifest), mcp.json and .mcp.json (the remote server), and one skill, skills/check-before-submission/SKILL.md, that tells an assistant how to use the tools and report their results. The server itself runs at manusights.com; there is no code to install.

Tools

ToolWhat it doesAccount
check_referencesChecks references against Crossref, the DOI registry and Retraction Watch. References without a DOI are also searched in Semantic Scholar, PubMed, arXiv, Open Library and CRAN. Reports retractions, corrections, expressions of concern, DOI mismatches and references with no matching record.Optional
get_journal_ai_policyReturns a journal's recorded AI-use and disclosure rules with the official policy link and the date they were checked.Optional
review_manuscript_textStarts a preview from the complete manuscript text: a readiness score, a verdict and the main risks a reviewer may raise. Figures are not reviewed from text.Required
review_manuscriptStarts a preview from an attached file, in clients that can pass the file's download URL (ChatGPT).Required
get_manuscript_reviewReads a preview or review on your account.Required
list_manuscript_reviewsLists your account's 20 most recent reviews.Required

Matching a record shows that a reference exists, not that it supports the claim it is cited for. A reference with no matching record may be a typo or a gap in the registries, not an invented paper.

Set up

Claude (claude.ai, desktop and mobile): open Customize, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Manusights and enter https://manusights.com/mcp. Guide: https://manusights.com/claude

ChatGPT: install Manusights from the ChatGPT app directory. Guide: https://manusights.com/chatgpt

Claude Code:

sh
claude mcp add --transport http manusights https://manusights.com/mcp

Then run /mcp, choose manusights and authenticate when you need a preview.

Codex:

sh
codex mcp add manusights --url https://manusights.com/mcpcodex mcp login manusights

Cursor: add to .cursor/mcp.json in a project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project:

json
{ "mcpServers": { "manusights": { "url": "https://manusights.com/mcp" } } }

VS Code: add to .vscode/mcp.json:

json
{ "servers": { "manusights": { "type": "http", "url": "https://manusights.com/mcp" } } }

Ask for Manusights by name, for example: "Use Manusights to check these references before I submit."

Data

A reference check sends only the references to Manusights. A preview sends the manuscript text or file you share and saves the preview to your Manusights account. Manusights does not write or rewrite manuscripts. Privacy policy: https://manusights.com/privacy. Terms: https://manusights.com/terms. check_references

Check references

Use this when the user wants to check references or citations from any source: a manuscript, a bibliography, a literature review, or citations an AI assistant gave earlier in the conversation. It reports whether each one exists, points to the right paper, or has been retracted, corrected or flagged, for questions like "are these references real?", "is this paper retracted?" or "is this DOI right?". Send citations from earlier in the conversation exactly as given, without correcting them first. Send every reference in the list as its own item, with or without a DOI (one without a DOI is matched by title and first author), with the full text as written, plus its DOI and title when you can read them, and any authors, journal, link, identifier or cite key you can read (the title lets a broken DOI be told apart from a missing work); up to 100 per call. For a whole reference list, such as the References section of an attached paper or a bibliography, send it as written, one reference per line, in reference_list instead of items: every reference in it is checked, in parts when it is long; call again with start_at as the result says until the whole list is done. When the whole original list's count is known, send it as expected_reference_count on every part; do not send a sample or reduce that count to fit a shortened input. Results come from Crossref, the DOI registry and Retraction Watch, and for references without a DOI also Semantic Scholar, PubMed, arXiv and, for books, Open Library; the manuscript itself is not sent. Do not use it to find new sources, to format citations, or to judge whether a source supports a claim. Report as the result's how_to_report says: each status as returned (for example "resolves" or "not found"), explained with the row detail; do not describe results as verified, fabricated or safe to cite. A reference with a DOI is compared by DOI and title only; one without a DOI must match a work by title and author.

get_journal_ai_policy

Get a journal's AI policy

Use this when the user asks what a named journal or publisher allows or requires about AI: AI as an author, disclosure statements and where they go, AI-generated images, uploading manuscripts to AI tools, or reviewers' and editors' AI use. It returns the rules as recorded from the publisher's official policy page, with that page's URL and the date Manusights last checked it. When the record is overdue for a re-check or the page could not be fully read, it says which and gives the URL instead of the rules. It also returns the journal's measured submission-to-acceptance time when Manusights has it. Takes an exact journal name or ISSN. Do not use it for word limits, formatting, fees or impact factors.

Parametersjournalrequired

review_manuscript

Start a manuscript preview

Use this when the user wants Manusights to review, check or assess a scientific manuscript they attached (PDF, Word, ODT, RTF, TXT, Markdown or LaTeX, up to 50 MB). Starts a pre-submission preview and returns a review_id right away. The preview takes a few minutes, so read it afterwards with get_manuscript_review using the same review_id. While processing, report status only; do not add a preliminary critique. Report only returned findings when ready. Each account can start a limited number of previews per day from connected apps; the result says when the limit is reached. Calling again with the same file and target journal returns the same review instead of starting another. Do not use it to write, rewrite or edit text, for figures or data files, or when no manuscript is attached.

Parametersmanuscriptrequiredtarget_journal

review_manuscript_text

Start a manuscript preview from its text

Use this when the user wants Manusights to review, check or assess a scientific manuscript and you have its full text (for example from a file the user attached or pasted), but cannot pass the file itself. Send the complete manuscript text, not a summary or excerpt: title, abstract, every section, figure legends and references. Figures and images are not reviewed in this mode; say so to the user. Accepts up to 600,000 characters. Calling again with the same text and target journal returns the same review instead of starting another. Do not use it to write, rewrite or edit text.

Parameterstarget_journalmanuscript_textrequired

get_manuscript_review

Read a manuscript review

Use this to read the preview, and the Full Review if the account has one, for a review_id returned by review_manuscript or list_manuscript_reviews. While preview.status is "processing", wait check_again_after_seconds and call again with the same review_id. Report status only while processing; when ready, report only returned findings without inventing critique or recommended fixes. Do not use it for review_ids the user has not referred to.

Parametersreview_idrequired

list_manuscript_reviews

List manuscript reviews

Use this when the user asks about their earlier Manusights reviews. Returns the 20 most recent, newest first.

Takes no parameters.
