Overview

AI-generated overview

MiCompress compresses images, PDFs, video, audio, documents and archives through micompress.com and returns a download link to the smaller file.

What you can do
  • Compress a file fetched from a public URL (direct link or Google Drive/Dropbox share link) and get a download link valid 24 hours with before/after sizes
  • Retrieve the result of a compression job by its job_id when the first call reports it is still processing
  • List supported file extensions grouped by category, with the size limit for the current connection
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to shrink images, PDFs, video, audio, Office documents or archives and can supply a public link to the file, for example in hosted clients that cannot run local commands or read local files.
Requirements
Remote endpoint at micompress.com over Streamable HTTP, or a local server run via npx (Node.js 18 or later) or a Docker image. No sign-in required; an optional personal API key can be supplied as the MICOMPRESS_API_KEY environment variable or X-API-Key header for larger files and a monthly allowance. Network access to micompress.com.
Before you install
Files are uploaded over HTTPS to micompress.com, a third-party service, so only point it at files you are comfortable sending off your machine. Anonymous use is capped by per-type size limits; a key raises the limit to 100 MB and ties usage to a monthly quota, with paid plans available. The API key is a secret and should be kept in the server environment.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open MiCompress in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.micompress%2Fmcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

micompress-mcp

An MCP server that lets AI agents compress images, PDFs, video, audio, documents & archives. Powered by micompress.com.

Ask your assistant "compress the screenshots in ./assets" and it will — no manual upload, no separate tool. Works with any Model Context Protocol client: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and others.

Hosted server (no install)

MiCompress also runs as a remote MCP server at https://micompress.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP, no sign-in). It compresses files by URL and returns a download link, so it suits Claude.ai, ChatGPT and other clients that cannot run local commands. Docs: micompress.com/mcp-server.

bash
claude mcp add --transport http micompress https://micompress.com/mcp

For files on your own disk, use the local server below.

Setup (local server)

Claude Code

bash
claude mcp add micompress -- npx -y micompress-mcp

Claude Desktop / Cursor

Add to your MCP config (claude_desktop_config.json on Desktop):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "micompress": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "micompress-mcp"]    }  }}

API key (optional)

Without a key the server works anonymously, within per-type size limits. For bigger files, sign in (free) at https://micompress.com/account, copy your personal key (mc_…) and pass it as the MICOMPRESS_API_KEY environment variable. The key stays in the server's environment — it is never sent to the model.

bash
claude mcp add micompress -e MICOMPRESS_API_KEY=mc_yourkey -- npx -y micompress-mcp
json
{  "mcpServers": {    "micompress": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "micompress-mcp"],      "env": { "MICOMPRESS_API_KEY": "mc_yourkey" }    }  }}

With a key, files up to 100 MB are accepted. A free account includes 50 compressions/month through the API; Plus ($9.99/mo) includes 1,000/month and Pro ($19.99/mo) 5,000/month, shared with website usage. When the allowance runs out the tool returns API_QUOTA_REACHED (free) or USAGE_LIMIT_REACHED (paid) — see https://micompress.com/plans.

Tools

compress_file

Compresses a file and writes the smaller version to disk.

InputDescription
path (required)File to compress
output_pathWhere to write it. Defaults to the input path with a -min suffix. Pass the input path to overwrite in place.
presetlossless · recommended (default) · extreme
max_widthImages only — resize down to this width in pixels

Returns the size before and after, plus the output path. The file bytes are never returned to the model — only the summary, so a large file can't flood the context window.

list_supported_formats

How it works

Files are uploaded over HTTPS to micompress.com and compressed with the same engine the website uses (mozjpeg, pngquant, gifski, Ghostscript, ffmpeg, …), then written back to disk. Anonymous use works within per-type size limits (images 20MB, video 50MB, …); set MICOMPRESS_API_KEY for files up to 100MB.

Point it at files you're comfortable sending to a third-party service. The agent passes a path; the file's contents leave your machine.

Requirements

Node.js >= 18
