Overview

AI-generated overview

Remote MCP server for looking up U.S. healthcare providers and organizations in the public CMS NPPES data by NPI, name, specialty or ZIP radius.

What you can do
  • Look up a single provider or organization by its 10-digit NPI
  • Search providers and organizations by name, location or specialty
  • Find providers within a radius of a ZIP code or lat/lng coordinates
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to resolve an NPI to a provider record, search for providers by specialty or place, or list providers near a ZIP code, using public CMS NPPES data.
Requirements
Remote streamable HTTP endpoint at npilayer.com; no local install. An optional Authorization header with a Bearer API key raises limits; lookup_npi and search_providers work without it but are rate-limited, while providers_near needs a key or OAuth sign-in.
Before you install
An NPI record only identifies a provider; it does not confirm licensure, credentialing, network participation, insurance acceptance or current practice status. Distance is measured from the ZIP centroid, not an exact address. Sending an API key in the Authorization header is optional but required for providers_near.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open NPILayer in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.npilayer%2Fnpilayer/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

lookup_npi

Look up an NPI

Look up a single U.S. healthcare provider or organization by its 10-digit National Provider Identifier (NPI), from CMS NPPES data. An NPI record identifies a provider; it does not indicate licensure, credentialing, network participation, or current practice status.

search_providers

Search providers

Search U.S. healthcare providers and organizations by name, location, or specialty, from CMS NPPES data. Provide at least one filter; an empty search returns an arbitrary page of providers rather than a meaningful result.

providers_near

Find providers near a location

Find U.S. healthcare providers within a radius of a ZIP code or coordinate, from CMS NPPES data. Provide either "zip", or both "lat" and "lng". Distance is measured from each provider's primary practice location to the ZIP centroid (not an exact street address), since NPILayer's geography is ZIP-based.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
