Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server that lets an assistant design, route, review and export manufacturable PCBs from plain-language requests.

What you can do
  • Create and edit boards from plain-language descriptions, run as background jobs with status and follow-up questions
  • Route unrouted connections, run design-rule checks and get engineering reviews of power, thermal, signal integrity and manufacturability
  • Inspect designs: board summaries with parts, nets and routing counts, and a list of designs in the account
  • Export Gerber, drill, BOM, pick-and-place, KiCad, STEP, IPC-2581, ODB++ or PDF via time-limited links, and open designs in the browser editor
  • Search a verified parts and footprint library, look up pin maps and packages, and list or add inventory parts
  • Import existing KiCad board files as new designs
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to turn a hardware idea into a placed, routed and design-rule-checked board, to review or fix an existing design, or to produce fabrication outputs such as Gerbers and a BOM without installing CAD software.
Requirements
Remote Streamable HTTP endpoint; no local install. Requires a PCBEditor account (free tier available) and sign-in via OAuth 2.1, or a personal access token created in the account's AI tools settings (for example via the PCBEDITOR_TOKEN environment variable). Network access required.
Before you install
Signing in grants the assistant access to your PCBEditor account and its designs; a personal access token is a credential and should be kept out of shared configs. Tools create, modify, route and import designs and add inventory parts, so changes are written to your account. Export links are time-limited. Designs and files are processed by a third-party hosted service.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open PCBEditor in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.pcbeditor%2Fpcbeditor/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

README

PCBEditor MCP server

Design, route, check and export manufacturable printed circuit boards from the AI tool you already use. PCBEditor is a hosted (remote) MCP server: add one URL, sign in, and ask for a board in plain language. You get it back placed, routed and design-rule checked, with Gerber and KiCad files. Nothing to install.

https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP (MCP 2025-11-25; also 2025-06-18 and 2025-03-26)
  • Sign-in: OAuth 2.1 (dynamic client registration and client metadata documents), or a personal access token
  • Account: free, at pcbeditor.com
  • Full documentation: pcbeditor.com/mcp
  • Official MCP Registry: com.pcbeditor/pcbeditor

This repository holds connection files only (the registry entry, a Claude Code plugin and a Gemini CLI extension). The server itself runs at the URL above.

Connect

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http pcbeditor https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and sign in when the browser opens. Or install the plugin from this repository:

/plugin marketplace add PCBEditor/pcbeditor-mcp/plugin install pcbeditor@pcbeditor

Claude Desktop and claude.ai

Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. Paste the server URL, continue, and sign in to PCBEditor when asked.

ChatGPT

At chatgpt.com/plugins, choose + → Add custom MCP server, enter the server URL and sign in with OAuth. ChatGPT does not send personal access tokens.

Codex CLI

~/.codex/config.toml:

toml
[mcp_servers.pcbeditor]url = "https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp"bearer_token_env_var = "PCBEDITOR_TOKEN"

Or leave out the token line and run codex mcp login pcbeditor.

Gemini CLI

gemini extensions install https://github.com/PCBEditor/pcbeditor-mcp

Or add it to ~/.gemini/settings.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "pcbeditor": {      "httpUrl": "https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp"    }  }}

Start Gemini CLI and run /mcp auth pcbeditor to sign in.

Cursor

~/.cursor/mcp.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "pcbeditor": {      "url": "https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp",      "headers": {        "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:PCBEDITOR_TOKEN}"      }    }  }}

Create the token in PCBEditor under Profile → AI tools.

VS Code with GitHub Copilot

.vscode/mcp.json:

json
{  "servers": {    "pcbeditor": {      "type": "http",      "url": "https://mcp.pcbeditor.com/mcp"    }  }}

VS Code runs the sign-in in your browser on first use.

Tools

ToolWhat it does
design_boardTurns a plain-language description into a complete board: parts, schematic, placement, routing and a design-rule check. Runs as a job.
get_jobStatus, progress and result of a job.
answer_questionAnswers a design job that paused on a question, such as which part to use.
edit_boardChanges an existing design from a plain-language instruction.
route_boardRoutes the board's unrouted connections.
review_boardEngineering review of a board: power, decoupling, thermal, signal integrity, manufacturability.
run_drcDesign-rule check results with locations.
export_boardGerber X2, drill, BOM, pick-and-place, KiCad, STEP, IPC-2581, ODB++ or PDF, as a time-limited download link.
get_boardBoard summary: parts, nets and routing counts.
list_designsThe designs in your account.
import_kicadImports a .kicad_pcb file as a new design.
open_in_editorA link that opens the design in PCBEditor's browser editor.
search_partsSearches PCBEditor's verified parts and footprint library.
get_partVerified pin map and package for a part number.
list_inventoryThe parts in your inventory.
add_inventory_partAdds a part you own, which later designs then use.

Example prompts

  • "Design a 2-layer board for an ESP32-C3 temperature and humidity sensor powered from USB-C."
  • "Review my latest design for power and decoupling problems, then fix what you find and re-route it."
  • "Add a 3 mm mounting hole in each corner."
  • "Export Gerbers, drill files, BOM and pick-and-place so I can order it."
  • "Import this .kicad_pcb and run the design-rule check."

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
