Overview

AI-generated overview

Remote MCP server that answers earthquake questions from USGS data: latest quakes, quakes near a US place, felt-shaking checks and place activity scores.

What you can do
  • List the most recent earthquakes worldwide or in the US, filtered by minimum magnitude and hours back
  • Find earthquakes within a radius of coordinates, a US ZIP code or town, with distances and the largest in the window
  • Look up full details and revision history for one earthquake by USGS event id or event URL
  • Get a 0-100 activity score and quiet/typical/elevated/unusual label for a US state or county
  • Check whether shaking just felt at a location matches a recorded quake, and list the largest events on record for a US place
When to use it
Useful when someone asks what earthquakes just happened, whether a quake was felt nearby, how unusual activity is for a US state or county, or what the largest recorded events in an area were. It reports observed USGS data only, not forecasts or warnings.
Requirements
A remote streamable HTTP endpoint at quakeindex.com; no packages, environment variables, headers or authentication are declared. Network access to the endpoint is needed.
Before you install
It does not predict earthquakes or issue warnings; the server points to ShakeAlert and MyShake for early warning. A not_yet_reported answer is not a no, since small quakes take minutes to be catalogued. Activity scores describe observed activity and are not risk ratings. Results are USGS data as held by QuakeIndex, so check the stated data age for staleness.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open QuakeIndex in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.quakeindex%2Fquakeindex/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

latest_earthquakes

Latest earthquakes

The most recent earthquakes recorded by USGS worldwide or only in the United States, newest first, filtered by minimum magnitude and hours back (up to 7 days). Use for 'any earthquakes today?' questions. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

earthquakes_near

Earthquakes near a place

Earthquakes within a radius of coordinates, a US ZIP code or a US town, over the last 1-365 days, newest first, each with its distance, plus the largest in the window. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

earthquake_details

Earthquake details and revisions

Everything QuakeIndex holds about one earthquake by USGS event id (or a QuakeIndex/USGS event URL), including every revision it observed — e.g. 'magnitude revised from 4.1 to 3.9'. An automatic solution is a first estimate and says so. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

place_activity

Is this normal for here?

The QuakeIndex score for a US state or county: the last 7 days' earthquake activity ranked 0-100 against that place's own 10-year history, its label (quiet / typical / elevated / unusual) and the normal band for a week. It describes observed activity and is NOT a forecast or a risk rating. A missing score is never zero. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

Parametersplacestatecounty

was_that_an_earthquake

Was that an earthquake?

Checks whether USGS has recorded an earthquake that someone who just felt shaking a few minutes ago could have felt: large and close enough for an estimated intensity of MMI 2+ at their location (Atkinson & Wald 2007, the equation USGS Did You Feel It? uses). Answers yes (with the event), not_yet_reported (nothing yet, but small quakes take minutes to be catalogued, so this is not a no), or no; smaller quakes recorded nearby are listed as too small to feel. The result links USGS Did You Feel It? for reporting shaking. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

largest_on_record

Largest earthquakes on record

The largest earthquakes in QuakeIndex's copy of the USGS catalogue for a US state, county ('Kern County, CA'), town ('Ridgecrest, CA') or ZIP code, with the catalogue span it covers. Data: USGS, as held by QuakeIndex. Each result includes its source, when the data was last confirmed, and links to the QuakeIndex and USGS event pages. No predictions and no warnings: results name ShakeAlert and MyShake as the sources of earthquake early warning.

83% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
