Overview

Materials's hosted MCP server (spacemushroom.com), published by spacemushroom.com; no sign-in required; Streamable HTTP; 11 tools.

No AI overview yet: these facts come from the registry entry and the server itself.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Materials in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.spacemushroom%2Fmaterials/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

Space Mushroom MCP server

A free, read-only Model Context Protocol server for engineering materials. Every number it returns comes with its unit, the conditions it was measured under, the method and the source it was read from, so an AI assistant can quote a value and prove where it came from.

Tools

ToolWhat it does
find_materialsRequirements in, candidates out. Each material gets pass, fail or unknown, with the evidence
search_materialsFind materials by name, abbreviation or formula
get_materialThe sourced record of one material: values, conditions, uses, hazards, failure modes, corrosion, supply
compareLine several materials up on one property, each value with its conditions and source
list_propertiesProperty names in use, with canonical units
list_claimsEvery current sourced value for a material, with an evidence level and a claim id
prove_claimEverything behind one value: as printed, converted, conditions, and where in each source
what_is_missingWhich properties have sourced data and which have none (not covered yet, not "safe")
resolve_designationWhich material a code names: UNS, EN, DIN, JIS, AISI/SAE, ASTM, AMS or a trade name
search_sourcesFull-text search over short quoted passages from the sources
get_termPlain-language definition of a technical term

Add it to a client

Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and other clients that accept a remote server:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "space-mushroom": { "url": "https://spacemushroom.com/mcp" }  }}

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http space-mushroom https://spacemushroom.com/mcp

Example questions

  • "Which stainless steels have a sourced minimum yield strength above 400 MPa, and what are the conditions?"
  • "What material is UNS S31600 and what is its density, with the source?"
  • "Compare PEEK, PEI and PPS on continuous service temperature."
  • "What does Space Mushroom have no data on for Ti-6Al-4V?"

How accurate is it?

Profiles are drafted with AI assistance from cited sources and then checked automatically: every value must be found in its cited source, and every designation must be printed there. Values marked ai_checked were re-read by an AI assistant, not a person. See the methodology and editorial policy. Check the source before using a value in a safety-critical design.

Tools

11

search_materials

Search materials

Find materials by name, abbreviation or formula. Optionally filter by category slug (for example polymers, metals, energy). Returns ids to use with get_material.

Parameterslimitqueryrequiredcategory

get_material

Get a material

The sourced record of one material: sourced numbers with conditions, method and source location, plus uses, hazards, failure modes, corrosion and supply facts. Optionally narrow to one property or fact topic.

Parametersidrequiredtopicpropertyinclude_facts

compare

Compare materials on one property

Line several materials up on one property, with each value, its conditions and its source. Values are also given in the property's canonical unit (value_canonical), so they can be ranked directly. Values measured under different conditions are listed separately and are not averaged.

Parameterspropertyrequiredmaterialsrequired

list_properties

List properties

The property names in use, with their canonical unit and whether higher or lower is better. Use these names with get_material and compare.

Parametersquery

get_term

Look up a term

A plain-language definition of a technical term or abbreviation used on material pages, for example ARC, SoC or adiabatic.

Parameterstermrequired

find_materials

Find materials that meet requirements

Requirements in, candidates out. Each material gets a verdict: pass (every constraint met by a sourced value), fail, or unknown (no data on a constraint, so it cannot be ruled in or out). Every constraint reports pass, fail or no_data and the strongest evidence level behind it (flown, measured, derived, inferred, estimated, predicted). By default only passes and unknowns are returned, passes first. Context narrows which values count: at_temperature (degrees C; values measured at another temperature do not count), flown_only (only values measured in the real space environment), environment, include_failed, limit. Materials with no data on any constraint are not listed: use what_is_missing to see coverage for one material.

Parameterscontextconstraintsrequired

list_claims

List the sourced values of a material

Every current sourced value for one material (optionally one property) in canonical units, with evidence level and a claim_id. Use the claim_id with prove_claim to see the exact source and passage.

Parametersmaterialrequiredproperty

prove_claim

Prove a value

Everything behind one value: as printed in the source, converted, the evidence level and what it means, the conditions, and each source with the place in it (and the passage where we have it).

Parametersclaim_idrequired

what_is_missing

What data is missing

For one material and a list of properties: which have sourced data (and the strongest evidence) and which have none. "no_data" means not covered yet, not known to be safe.

Parametersmaterialrequiredpropertiesrequired

resolve_designation

Resolve a designation

Which material a code names: a UNS number, EN number or name, DIN, JIS, AISI or SAE number, ASTM or AMS specification, or trade name (for example S31600, 1.4401, SUS316, A240). Case, spaces and hyphens do not matter, and a short code also lists the codes that start with it. Each row gives the system, the code, a note (product form or a caveat) and whether the match is exact. A specification such as ASTM A240 covers many grades and returns every material that cites it. A note of "nearest equivalent" means the source itself hedges: do not treat the two as the same grade.

Parameterscoderequired

search_sources

Search source passages

Full-text search over short passages quoted from our sources. Returns the passage, the source and the place in it. Passages are still being added, so an empty answer means none indexed yet.

90% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
