Overview

AI-generated overview

Read-only MCP server for U.S. septic licensing by state, license-matched septic company listings, and cited septic cost guides from thesepticguide.com.

What you can do
  • List states that have a septic licensing page or company directory, with links
  • Get a state's licensing agency, official license lookup link, page date and licensing Q&A
  • Search listed septic companies by state with optional city, county, ZIP, service or licensed-only filters, returning license records, agency verify links, phone and website
  • Look up septic cost guidance by topic (pumping, inspection, repair, installation, drain field, tank replacement, aerobic systems) with cost tables and cited sources
When to use it
Useful when someone needs to find who licenses septic installers or pumpers in a U.S. state, locate septic contractors with license records, or get published cost ranges for septic work. It is a read-only reference, not a booking or payment tool.
Requirements
Remote Streamable HTTP endpoint at mcp.thesepticguide.com/mcp; no API key or account. A local stdio option exists via a Node.js build from the project repository, or Docker. Answers come from a bundled snapshot by default, with an optional live mode.
Before you install
Read-only with no writes and no user data collected, but data is a snapshot that can lag the live site, so check the reported data date. License matches are made by the site, not a state agency, and the server is not affiliated with any agency; confirm licenses with the agency verify link before hiring. Results are limited to companies and pages published on thesepticguide.com.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open The Septic Guide in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.thesepticguide%2Fthesepticguide/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

The Septic Guide MCP server

Read-only Model Context Protocol server for thesepticguide.com, a U.S. septic contractor directory built from published state license and certification records.

No API key. No writes. Every result carries a source_url on thesepticguide.com.

Tools

ToolWhat it returns
list_statesStates with a licensing page and/or company directory, with links
get_state_licensingstate (name or code): the agency that licenses septic work, its official lookup URL, page date, and the page's licensing Q&A
search_septic_companiesstate plus optional city, county, zip, service, licensed_only, limit: listings with license number(s), agency verify link, phone, website, profile link
get_cost_guideoptional topic (e.g. pumping, drain field): short answer, cost tables, and the third-party sources the page cites. No topic = list topics

Data

By default the server answers from a bundled snapshot in data/ (data/snapshot.json for the index, licensing and cost pages, plus one gzipped file per state in data/companies/). Every response includes data_mode and data_as_of (the snapshot date). Rebuild it with:

bash
npm run snapshot # crawls thesepticguide.com (sitemap, state + county pages) and rewrites data/

Set TSG_LIVE=1 to skip the snapshot and read thesepticguide.com live instead (6-hour in-memory cache). Live mode is also used automatically if data/ is missing.

Company counts

Each state page's meta description gives a headline number (e.g. Texas: "363 septic companies"). In some states the listings actually rendered on the state page plus its county pages come to fewer (Texas: 360). The server never pads results: search_septic_companies reports listed_on_pages (rendered listings it searched) and state_page_headline_count (the page's own number), with a count_note when they differ. Same-name listings with different services or license records are distinct state-list records and are kept.

Data & limits

  • Read-only. No writes, no API key, no user data collected.
  • Public data from thesepticguide.com. Every result carries a source_url on thesepticguide.com.
  • License data comes from published state agency license and certification lists, as matched by thesepticguide.com. Confirm any license with the agency verify_url before hiring.
  • Not affiliated with any state agency.
  • Snapshot data can lag the live site; check data_as_of.
