Maps, geocoding and time zones for AI coding agents, on OpenStreetMap, with hard prepaid spend caps.

Overview

AI-generated overview

MapRouter gives coding agents OpenStreetMap-based geocoding, time zones and MapLibre map snippets, with prepaid spend caps.

What you can do
  • Create project keys and return environment lines for a new map setup
  • Geocode addresses or places to coordinates, and reverse geocode coordinates to addresses
  • Get search-as-you-type place suggestions and IANA time zone, UTC offset and DST for a point
  • Generate working MapLibre code with markers for HTML, React, Vue or Svelte
  • Check balance, free quota and key caps, and lower a key's daily or monthly budget
When to use it
Useful when a coding agent is adding a map, address lookup or time zone feature to an app and you want geocoding and ready-made MapLibre snippets without wiring up a provider by hand. The prepaid caps suit teams that want a hard limit on map API spending.
Requirements
Hosted endpoint signs in with GitHub, so no key is copied. Local stdio use needs Node 22.18 or later and a secret key from the MapRouter app, passed as the MAPROUTER_SECRET_KEY environment variable. The npm package is described as not yet published, so local use may require cloning the repository.
Before you install
Geocoding, reverse geocoding, autocomplete and time zone calls consume prepaid credits (10, 10, 2 and 1 credits respectively), so usage spends real money. The server creates publishable and secret keys, and the local setup passes a secret key through an environment variable. Budget tools can only lower caps, never raise them or add credits.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open MapRouter in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/dev.maprouter%2Fmcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

README

MapRouter MCP server

Maps your agent can set up, and a bill that can't run away.

This MCP server lets a coding agent add a working map to an app: it creates MapRouter keys, geocodes addresses, and writes MapLibre code for HTML, React, Vue or Svelte. MapRouter is prepaid, so the agent can read usage and lower budgets but can never add credits or raise a budget.

Use the hosted server (recommended)

No key to copy: it signs you in with GitHub.

sh
claude mcp add --transport http maprouter https://mcp.maprouter.dev/mcp

Claude Code plugin

This repo is also a Claude Code plugin marketplace. The plugin adds the hosted server and an add-a-map skill:

sh
/plugin marketplace add maprouter-dev/maprouter-mcp/plugin install maprouter@maprouter

Run it locally

For clients that only run local servers. (The npm package is not published yet; until then, clone this repo and point your client at node src/stdio.ts.) Create a secret key at https://app.maprouter.dev.

Requires Node 22.18 or later.
