Overview

AI-generated overview

CitedBy is a free, read-only remote MCP server that checks whether a website can be found and cited by AI assistants and search engines.

What you can do
  • Check a single page for SEO and AI-answer issues, with the reason and exact fix for each finding
  • Test whether robots.txt and the server allow named AI crawlers such as GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot
  • Check whether a site has a working /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, with a draft when none exists
  • Report how many domains link to a domain and the strongest referrers, from Common Crawl data
When to use it
Useful when auditing or improving a site's visibility to AI assistants and search engines, or when answering questions about crawler access, llms.txt and backlinks for a domain.
Requirements
Remote Streamable HTTP endpoint at citedby.eu/mcp; no account, sign-in, API key or local runtime needed. Rate limited to 40 checks per hour per address, with results reused for up to 6 hours (1 hour for page checks).
Before you install
Read-only and free, but it fetches public pages and robots.txt as its own crawler, so the target site sees those requests. Whole-site audits and higher page limits require a paid plan on the provider's site. Backlink data covers only domains with 100 or more referring domains under .eu, EU and UK country domains plus the 5,000 most-linked sites.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open CitedBy in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/eu.citedby%2Fcitedby/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Tools

ToolWhat you get
check_pageOne page, fetched as CitedBot (robots.txt respected): what is wrong for AI answers and search, each finding with why it matters and the exact fix. Deterministic checks only.
check_ai_crawler_accessFor GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Bingbot and Googlebot: allowed by robots.txt, and answered by the server, or not.
check_llms_txtWhether /llms.txt exists, whether its links work, whether /llms-full.txt exists.
backlinksHow many domains link to a domain, and the strongest ones, from the Common Crawl web graph. Says when a domain is not in the data.

When a site refuses the crawler or does not answer, the tool says so. It does not score what it could not read.

check_page

Check one page for AI-search and SEO problems

Fetch one public web page as CitedBot (robots.txt respected) and return what is wrong with it for AI answers and search: title, description, headings, structured data, canonical, language, links and more. Each finding has why it matters and the exact fix. Deterministic checks only; says so when the page cannot be fetched.

check_ai_crawler_access

Which AI crawlers can read this site

Read a site's robots.txt and test the server for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Bingbot and Googlebot. Returns, per crawler, whether robots.txt allows it and whether the server answers it, so you can see who is blocked and by what.

check_llms_txt

Check a site's llms.txt

Fetch /llms.txt of a site and report whether it exists, whether its links work, and whether /llms-full.txt exists. When there is none, the full report holds a draft built from the site's own pages.
