Overview

AI-generated overview

Gale Finance serves published risk and return metrics for stocks, ETFs, crypto and commodities, with citable source pages.

What you can do
  • Look up return, CAGR, volatility, Sharpe, Sortino and max drawdown for one asset over 1Y and long windows
  • Inspect downside risk: 5% VaR, expected shortfall, skew, excess kurtosis and largest drawdown episodes
  • Compare two assets on 1Y, calendar-year or long-term scorecards with year-by-year returns
  • Rank covered assets by a single metric, optionally filtered by asset type
  • Search coverage by ticker or name and list the pair comparisons and scorecards published for each asset
When to use it
Useful when an assistant should answer risk and performance questions about stocks, ETFs, crypto or commodities with figures that trace back to a citable source page, rather than raw prices or price history.
Requirements
Remote streamable HTTP endpoint at gale.finance; no account, API key or authentication needed. Any client that supports remote MCP servers over streamable HTTP can connect.
Before you install
Read-only and free, but it returns only Gale's computed metrics, not prices or price history. Figures are educational data, not investment advice, and each answer should be cited to its source page. Requests are logged with tool, resolved page, search-text length, result count, timing and User-Agent.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Gale Finance in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/finance.gale%2Fmarket-metrics/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Risk and return metrics for stocks, ETFs, crypto and commodities, from Gale Finance, for AI assistants.

Ask your assistant things like "What's the Sortino ratio of gold?" or "How has gold performed against bitcoin over the long run?" With this server connected, it answers with the figures Gale publishes and links the Gale page each number comes from.

https://www.gale.finance/mcp

The server is free and read-only, and needs no account or API key. It returns computed metrics, such as Sharpe and Sortino ratios, volatility, drawdowns, tail risk, correlation and calendar-year returns. It does not return price quotes or price history.

This repository holds the documentation and the Claude Code plugin. The server runs on gale.finance; its source is not published here.

Data and methodology

  • Coverage: about 200 assets across stocks, ETFs, crypto and commodities, with several hundred published pair comparisons and long-term scorecards.
  • Freshness: the server serves the same figures as the published site and updates with each site release. Each answer states its data-through date.
  • Method: crypto is annualized over 365 days and stocks and ETFs over 252. Risk-free rates come from US Treasury bill yields (FRED). Single-asset metrics use each asset's full window. See the methodology and the glossary.
  • Not included: prices, price history, and "what if you had invested" calculations.

Gale Finance publishes educational data, not investment advice.

Privacy

The server logs one line per request: the tool, the Gale page it resolved to, the length of any search text (never the text itself), the result count, the timing and the User-Agent. It does not log your conversation, and it needs no account. See the privacy policy and the terms.

Support

Email [email protected] or open an issue. Include the client you use and the question you asked.

get_risk_return_metrics

Risk and return metrics for an asset

Gale Finance's published return, CAGR, volatility, Sharpe, Sortino and max drawdown for one asset (stock, ETF, crypto, or commodity), on its 1Y window and its long window (5Y or since inception), each with a one-line method note and the canonical Gale page to cite. Example: "What's the Sortino ratio of gold?". Computed metrics only; no prices.

Parametersassetrequiredwindowmetrics

get_downside_risk

Downside and tail risk for an asset

Gale Finance's published downside risk for one asset: daily 5% VaR, expected shortfall, skew and excess kurtosis, the largest drawdown episodes with peak/trough/recovery dates, 1Y max drawdown, and best/worst day from a published compare page. Example: "What are the tail risks for bitcoin?".

Parametersassetrequired

compare_assets

Compare two assets' performance and risk

Compare two assets using Gale Finance's published pair pages: the rolling 1Y compare (default), a calendar-year compare (horizon "2024"), or the long-term scorecard with year-by-year returns (horizon "long_term"). Pairs resolve in either order and keep the cited page's A/B labels. When Gale has no pair page, returns each asset's own metrics side by side and says pair figures are not published. Example: "How has gold performed vs bitcoin historically?".

Parametersasset_arequiredasset_brequiredhorizon

rank_assets_by_metric

Rank assets by a risk or return metric

Rank the assets Gale Finance covers by one published metric (return, cagr, volatility, sharpe, sortino, max_drawdown, var_5, es_5, skew, excess_kurtosis), optionally filtered by asset type. Each row carries its value, window dates, and Gale page. Example: "Which crypto had the best Sharpe last year?".

Parameterslimitordermetricrequiredwindowasset_type

find_assets

Find assets Gale covers

Search the assets Gale Finance covers by ticker or name and list, for each, its asset page and the published pair comparisons, calendar-year pages, and long-term scorecards. Omit query to page through all coverage. Example: "Do you cover Hyperliquid?".
