Social cards and OG images from designed templates: card from a URL, presets, meta tags, link checks

VerifiedStreamable HTTPWeb executableWeb Search & ScrapingMedia & Design

Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server that makes social cards and OG images from designed templates, checks link previews and generates meta tags.

What you can do
Make a social card from an existing page URL, with a design picked to fit it, or browse and preview starter presets with your own text (watermarked, no account). Check how a link previews on X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord, and generate Open Graph and Twitter head tags. With an account, list and save templates, render clean PNGs from saved templates, and build signed og:image URLs rendered on first fetch. Check plan, watermark status and monthly image quota.
When to use it
Useful when you need link-preview or social share images for pages, want to diagnose why a link previews badly, or need Open Graph and Twitter tags generated. Also fits producing consistent branded cards for many pages or products from one saved template.
Requirements
Remote Streamable HTTP endpoint; no local install. Free tools need no account. Account tools need either an API key sent as an Authorization Bearer header or OAuth 2.1 sign-in via the account endpoint. Network access to the hosted service.
Before you install
Account tools require credentials: an API key or OAuth sign-in. Renders spend a monthly image quota; on the free tier images are watermarked, and clean images need a paid plan. save_template and render_card write to your account. Page URLs and image URLs you pass are fetched server-side by the service.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open betterimage.io in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.betterimage%2Fbetterimage/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

betterimage.io MCP server

Social cards and OG images for your AI assistant. Give Claude, Cursor, VS Code or any MCP client a page URL and get back a link-preview card on a design picked to fit the page; browse 100 starter designs, preview them with your own text, check how a link previews on X, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord, generate Open Graph and Twitter tags, and with an account save templates, render clean images and get signed og:image URLs that need no hosting.

Every image is rendered from a designed template by a deterministic renderer: the text changes, layout, fonts and colours stay on-brand. No generative image model is involved.

This repository holds the public distribution files for the hosted server (install manifests, registry metadata). The server itself runs at https://betterimage.io/mcp and is documented at https://betterimage.io/mcp.

Tools

No account needed:

  • card_from_url: a social card for an existing page, in one call. Fetches the page like a crawler, picks the design that fits it, returns the image (watermarked preview).
  • list_presets: the 100 starter designs with key, size, categories and preview image.
  • preview_card: render a preset with your text (watermarked preview, no quota).
  • check_link_preview: what X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord will show for a URL, with concrete fixes.
  • generate_meta_tags: the complete <head> block with Open Graph and Twitter tags.

With an account (OAuth or API key):

  • list_templates, save_template: your saved designs.
  • render_card: a clean PNG from a saved template (paid plans; watermarked on the free tier).
  • og_image_url: a signed og:image URL rendered on first fetch and cached at the edge, so every page gets its own card with no hosting.
  • get_usage: plan, watermark status and monthly quota.

Every render tool's fields object also takes the card's pictures by URL - image_url, image2_url, logo_url and background_url - fetched server-side and drawn in the slot the design already lays out. That is what turns one saved template into a whole catalogue: one card per product, same colours, fonts and crop framing. PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 5 MB, decided by the bytes rather than the URL; the fetch is SSRF-hardened and a URL pointing back at betterimage.io is refused.

Every tool carries a title and readOnlyHint/destructiveHint annotations; the two write tools are save_template and render_card.

Registries

  • Official MCP Registry: io.betterimage/betterimage (server.json in this repo)
  • Smithery: @matfun93/betterimage

Cursor plugin

.cursor-plugin/plugin.json and mcp.json make this repository installable as a Cursor plugin; the plugin only registers the hosted server.

In JavaScript

For code rather than an assistant, @betterimage/cards builds the same signed image URLs from Node, Bun, Deno or an edge runtime, with no dependencies.

Tools

10

card_from_url

Card from a page URL

Make a social card for a page that already exists, in one call: fetches the page like a crawler, takes its title, description, author, domain and site icon, picks the starter design that fits the page (a Jev decision over every preset, about 100 ms) and returns the image (shown inline, watermarked, free). Use this first when the user gives a URL: "make an OG image for my latest post". Any field you pass overrides what the page says. Pass preset (see list_presets) to choose the design yourself, or a size. No API key needed; one page fetch plus one render per call.

Parametersurlrequiredsizefieldspreset

list_presets

List starter designs

Browse the ready-made designs (presets) a card can start from: key, name, template kind, native size, use-case categories, a one-line look description and a preview image URL. Start here when the user wants a social card and has no saved template. Then call preview_card with the chosen key. No API key needed.

Parameterskindquerycategory

preview_card

Preview a card from a preset

Render a preset with the user's text and return the image (shown inline). Free, no API key; the preview carries a small betterimage.io watermark and does not touch any quota. Use it to show the user what their card will look like before they commit. For a clean image: save_template + render_card on a paid API plan, or the one-off clean download in the editor.

Parameterssizefieldspresetrequired

generate_meta_tags

Generate meta tags

Build the complete <head> block for a page: <title>, meta description, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter card tags, with og:image width/height. Returns HTML to paste plus notes on anything worth fixing (title too long, image over http). Use after check_link_preview, or whenever a user needs the tags for a new page. No API key needed; nothing is fetched.

Parametersurltypetitlerequiredimage_altimage_urlsite_namedescriptionimage_widthimage_heighttwitter_card

list_templates

List saved templates

The user's saved templates (their own designs, made in the editor or with save_template): slug, name, kind, the fields render_card and og_image_url can override, and when it was last edited. Needs an API key. Call this before render_card or og_image_url when you do not know the slug.

Takes no parameters.

save_template

Save a preset as a template

Copy a preset (optionally with the user's text as its new defaults) into the user's account as a saved template, so render_card and og_image_url can use it. Needs an API key. Do this once per design, not per image: afterwards every render only passes the text that changes. Returns the slug to use next and a link to fine-tune the design in the editor.

Parametersnamesizefieldspresetrequired

render_card

Render a saved template

Render one of the user's saved templates with the given text and return the PNG (shown inline, at 1x). Needs an API key. On a paid plan the image is clean (no watermark); on the free tier it is watermarked. Each call spends one image of the monthly quota. Use it when the user wants the actual file, e.g. to host it themselves. For an og:image tag that needs no hosting, or for a 2x retina file, prefer og_image_url.

Parameterssizefieldstemplaterequired

og_image_url

Signed og:image URL

Build a signed image URL for a saved template with the given text, ready to put in a page's <meta property="og:image"> tag. Nothing is rendered now: the image is generated when a crawler fetches the URL, cached at the edge for a day, and each uncached fetch spends one image of the monthly quota. Needs an API key. This is the zero-infrastructure way to give every page its own card; use it in page templates, CMS hooks and static site generators. Returns the URL and the ready meta tag.

Parameterssizescalefieldstemplaterequired

get_usage

Quota and plan

The API key's plan, whether renders are watermarked, and this month's image quota: used, remaining, and the reset date. Needs an API key. Check it before batch renders, or when a render came back watermarked unexpectedly.

Takes no parameters.
