Local image tools: circle crop, crop, resize, compress, convert JPG/PNG/WebP/AVIF. By RoundCut.
Overview
Local MCP server that lets an assistant inspect, circle-crop, crop, resize, compress and convert images on your own machine.
- What you can do
- Inspect an image's format, dimensions, alpha and EXIF orientation before choosing parameters
- Make round avatars with a circular transparent mask, or crop to a pixel box or fixed aspect ratio
- Resize by width, height or percent while keeping the aspect ratio
- Compress files in the same format, or convert between JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF (GIF, TIFF and HEIC accepted as input)
- Return a text summary, a link to the output file, structured JSON and an optional small JPEG preview
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to prepare images for uploads, profile pictures, banners or web pages without sending files to a third-party service. Good for quick avatar, ratio and format conversions on a desktop machine.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local stdio process started with npx, so Node.js 20 or newer is needed. No accounts, API keys or network access are required; a self-contained bundle is offered for macOS Apple Silicon and Windows x64.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Roundcut Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
roundcut-mcp
Local image tools for AI agents, as an MCP server. Circle crop, crop, resize, compress and convert JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF on your own machine with sharp. No network calls, no accounts, no upload: the files never leave the disk.
Made by RoundCut, the free image tools site (29 languages).
Install
Node 20 or newer.
Claude Desktop / Claude Code
Claude Code: claude mcp add roundcut -- npx -y roundcut-mcp
Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code
Same shape: a stdio server, command npx, args -y roundcut-mcp.
Smithery
smithery.ai/servers/araluma/roundcut-mcp
installs a self-contained bundle for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows (x64). On Linux or an
Intel Mac, use npx above.
Tools
Every tool takes an input path and writes next to it by default
(photo.jpg becomes photo-circle.png, photo-resized.jpg, photo.webp), or to output.
Results carry a text summary, a resource_link to the file, structured JSON
(output, format, width, height, bytes, inputBytes) and a small JPEG preview
(preview: false to skip it).
Example, from a chat client with the server attached:
Make
~/Pictures/me.jpga 512 px round avatar as WebP.
calls circle_crop with { "input": "~/Pictures/me.jpg", "size": 512, "format": "webp" }
and answers with the file path, the dimensions and the byte count.
Limits
- Inputs above 80 megapixels are refused, so a stray call cannot allocate gigabytes.
- EXIF orientation is applied on read; the output is upright and carries no EXIF.
- jpeg has no alpha: transparent areas are flattened onto
background(white by default).
Develop
src/engine.ts is the pure image layer (tested directly). src/index.ts adapts it to MCP tools.
Smithery release: scripts/build-mcpb.sh builds build/roundcut-mcp-<version>.mcpb from
mcpb/manifest.json (25 MB cap, so only the macOS arm64 and Windows x64 sharp binaries go in),
then scripts/publish-smithery.sh uploads it with the tool schemas read from the built server.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
