Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an AI assistant create, read, edit and organize Excalidraw diagrams in a CanvasKeep workspace, including auto-laid-out diagrams from nodes and edges.

What you can do
  • List, create and manage workspaces and nested folders
  • List, create, rename and permanently delete diagrams
  • Read diagram metadata and element counts, or the full Excalidraw scene
  • Write a full Excalidraw scene back to a diagram
  • Generate a diagram from nodes and edges with server-side auto-layout
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to turn a description into a diagram, such as an architecture sketch, and keep it in a CanvasKeep workspace, or to read and revise existing diagrams there.
Requirements
Runs locally via npx (Node.js) over stdio. Requires a CanvasKeep account and an API key in CANVASKEEP_API_KEY; CANVASKEEP_MASTER_KEY is needed for encrypted diagrams, and CANVASKEEP_API_URL optionally overrides the API base URL. Network access to CanvasKeep is required.
Before you install
The API key grants access to your CanvasKeep workspace, and the master key unlocks encrypted diagrams; both are passed as environment variables, so keep them out of shared configs. Tools can create, rename and permanently delete diagrams and overwrite scenes. Diagrams made with generate_diagram are laid out on CanvasKeep's servers and stored unencrypted.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open CanvasKeep in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

CanvasKeep MCP Server

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets AI tools like Claude Code and Codex generate Excalidraw diagrams and save them directly into your CanvasKeep workspace.

[npm] [license]

Setup

1. Get an API key

  1. Log in to CanvasKeep
  2. Click your profile menu (top right) and select API Keys
  3. Generate a new key and copy it immediately (you won't see it again)

2. Install and register

Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add canvaskeep \ -e CANVASKEEP_API_KEY=ck_your_key_here \ -- npx canvaskeep-mcp

Codex / other MCP clients:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "canvaskeep": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["canvaskeep-mcp"],      "env": {        "CANVASKEEP_API_KEY": "ck_your_key_here"      }    }  }}

3. Environment variables

VariableRequiredDefaultDescription
CANVASKEEP_API_KEYYes-Your API key from the CanvasKeep dashboard
CANVASKEEP_MASTER_KEYNo-Needed to read or edit encrypted diagrams. Copy it from canvaskeep.com/dashboard/encryption (Key for the MCP server)

Encryption

Diagrams you encrypt in CanvasKeep stay encrypted when an AI tool works with them. When get_diagram_scene or save_diagram_scene touches an encrypted diagram, this server decrypts and re-encrypts it locally (AES-GCM, see src/encryption.ts) using CANVASKEEP_MASTER_KEY. The master key never leaves your machine.

generate_diagram sends the nodes and edges you give it to CanvasKeep, which lays them out on the server, so diagrams generated this way are stored unencrypted.

Example usage

Ask Claude Code something like:

"Draw an architecture diagram of a web app with a React frontend, Node API, PostgreSQL database, and Redis cache"

Claude will use the MCP tools to create a diagram in your CanvasKeep workspace with properly laid-out boxes and labeled arrows.

Development

bash
git clone https://github.com/CanvasKeep/canvaskeep-mcp.gitcd canvaskeep-mcpnpm installnpm run buildCANVASKEEP_API_KEY=ck_... CANVASKEEP_API_URL=http://localhost:3000 node dist/index.js

To run your local build from Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add canvaskeep \ -e CANVASKEEP_API_KEY=ck_your_key_here \ -- node /path/to/canvaskeep-mcp/dist/index.js

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
