Search Wikipedia and read articles, summaries, sections, links, and coordinates.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Read-only Wikipedia lookup server: search articles and fetch full text, lead summaries, section outlines, outgoing links and coordinates.

What you can do
  • Search Wikipedia articles by query, with an optional result limit, returning titles, page ids, snippets, word counts and revision timestamps
  • Read an article's full plain-text content or just its lead summary
  • Retrieve an article's section outline in document order
  • List the pages an article links to, with namespace and whether the target exists
  • Get the latitude/longitude coordinates recorded for a page, with the primary one flagged
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs factual background, definitions or reference material from Wikipedia without scraping pages itself, for example to summarize a topic, outline an article or check where a subject is located. Titles follow redirects, so common or old names still resolve.
Requirements
Runs locally over stdio via npx (npm package) or the published container image. No account, API key, environment variable or header is needed; it calls the public Wikipedia APIs on en.wikipedia.org, so network access is required. Desktop only.
Before you install
Read-only: it searches and fetches content but does not edit Wikipedia. Queries and titles are sent to the public Wikipedia APIs, so anything you look up leaves the machine. Content comes from English Wikipedia and is only as current or accurate as the upstream pages; a title that does not resolve returns an error rather than empty content.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Encyport in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

encyport

encyport reads Wikipedia so people and agents do not have to scrape it. Give it a phrase and it finds matching articles; give it a title and it hands back the article text, just the lead summary, the section outline, the pages the article links to, or the coordinates recorded for the subject — all from the public Wikipedia APIs on en.wikipedia.org, with nothing to sign up for and no API key.

Install

bash
npx @reneturcios/encyport search "analytical engine"

Or run the container image:

bash
docker run -i ghcr.io/cloudcorprecords/encyport

The container defaults to the MCP server (see below). Pass CLI arguments to use it as a CLI instead.

CLI

Every command prints JSON.

bash
# Search for articlesencyport search Ada Lovelaceencyport search black holes --limit 5
# Read a page four ways, plus its coordinatesencyport article Ada Lovelaceencyport summary Ada Lovelaceencyport sections Ada Lovelaceencyport links Ada Lovelaceencyport coordinates Eiffel Tower
encyport --version

Titles and queries may contain spaces; everything after the command word is joined into one phrase. Exit codes: 0 on success, 1 when the lookup fails (a missing page or an upstream error, named in the message), 2 for usage errors.

MCP server

One bin serves both faces. The mcp subcommand starts a stdio MCP server:

bash
npx -y @reneturcios/encyport mcp

MCP client configuration:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "encyport": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@reneturcios/encyport", "mcp"]    }  }}

Tools

ToolInputWhat it returns
search_wikipediaquery (string, required), limit (integer, optional)Matching articles: title, page id, a cleaned text snippet, word count, and last-revision timestamp for each hit.
get_articletitle (string, required)The full plain-text content of the article.
get_summarytitle (string, required)The lead section of the article as plain text — the part most readers mean by "the summary".
get_sectionstitle (string, required)The article's section outline: section number, heading, heading level, and parse index, in document order.
get_linkstitle (string, required)Pages this article links to, each with its namespace and whether the target page exists.
get_coordinatestitle (string, required)Latitude/longitude pairs recorded for the page (empty when the subject has none), with the primary coordinate flagged.

Titles follow redirects, so a common name or an old title still lands on the current article. A title that does not resolve to a page is reported as an error rather than returning empty content.

Development

bash
npm installnpm run build # tsc -> dist/npm test # node test runner over test/*.test.ts, no networknpm run dev # run the CLI from source via tsx

The core takes an injectable fetch function, and the test suite drives it entirely with hand-written payloads shaped like real Wikipedia API responses — the tests never touch the network.
