Overview

AI-generated overview

Local stdio MCP server that lets an assistant drive tmux on your machine: list, create, rename and kill sessions, manage windows and panes, send keys and…

What you can do
  • List, create, rename and kill tmux sessions, and read session details such as window count, creation time and attached state
  • List, create and kill windows inside a session, and select which window is active
  • List the panes of a session or window
  • Send a command line or key names to a pane, and capture a pane's visible contents as text
When to use it
Useful when you work in tmux and want an assistant to inspect running sessions, start new ones, type commands into panes, or read back terminal output without you switching windows. It is a local desktop tool, not a remote service.
Requirements
Runs as a local process via npx (npm package) or Docker over stdio. A tmux binary must be present on the host; the container image bundles none, so containerised runs report tmux unavailable. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are declared.
Before you install
It acts on your real tmux server: kill_session and kill_window terminate sessions and windows, and send_keys types into live panes, which can run commands or affect running programs. Review destructive or typed actions before approving them.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Termmux in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

termmux

Drive local tmux from the command line or as a stdio MCP server. List, create, rename and kill sessions; manage windows and panes; send keys to a pane and capture its visible output.

Every operation runs the real tmux binary with an argument array (execFile, never a shell string) behind an injectable executor, so session names and key text are never reinterpreted as shell syntax. Name a session that does not exist and you get tmux's own error back. When no tmux server is running, list calls return empty lists — the same empty world tmux reports.

Install

bash
npx -y @reneturcios/termmux mcp

Requires a tmux binary on the host (the container image bundles none, so containerised runs report tmux unavailable).

CLI

bash
termmux mcptermmux list-sessionstermmux create-session <name> [window] [start-dir]termmux kill-session <name>termmux list-windows <session>termmux capture <session> [pane]termmux send <session> <keys...>termmux --version

Exit codes: 0 success, 1 tmux error, 2 usage error.
