AI-powered bioprotocol optimization — generate, search, and manage lab protocols via MCP

Overview

AI-generated overview

Connects an assistant to the Elnora bioprotocol platform to generate, search, and manage lab protocols, files, projects, and tasks.

What you can do
  • Generate optimized bioprotocols from natural-language descriptions
  • Create task threads, send messages, and get AI responses
  • Upload, download, version, fork, and organize protocol files in folders
  • Create projects, manage team membership, and invite members
  • Search across tasks, files, and resources; browse the shared protocol library
  • Manage organization settings, billing, API keys, audit logs, and account profile
When to use it
Useful for researchers and lab teams already on Elnora who want an AI assistant to draft protocols, find existing protocol files, or organize projects and tasks without leaving the chat client.
Requirements
A remote endpoint at mcp.elnora.ai (no installation needed) or the npm package over stdio. An Elnora account with OAuth 2.1 login, or an Elnora API key passed in the X-API-Key header or as a bearer token. Internet access to the service.
Before you install
The API key is a credential: keep it out of version control, store it in a secrets manager, and rotate it. Tools can write and change data, including creating projects, inviting members, uploading files, and managing billing and API keys. Protocol generation can take 30-120 seconds. OAuth consent screens should be reviewed before approving.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Elnora MCP Server in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.Elnora-AI%2Felnora-mcp-server/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

What is Elnora?

Elnora is an AI-powered platform that helps researchers generate, optimize, and manage bioprotocols for wet-lab experiments. With this MCP server, you can interact with Elnora directly from AI coding assistants like Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, and ChatGPT.

Quick Start

Add the Elnora MCP server to your AI client. No installation required — just point to the remote URL.

Setting this up from inside a coding agent? See INSTALL_FOR_AGENTS.md for a step-by-step, self-verifying runbook (client config, auth, and a smoke test).

Claude Code

bash
claude mcp add elnora --transport http --scope user https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp

Installation scopes:

ScopeFlagWhere it's storedBest for
User--scope user~/.claude.jsonAvailable in all your projects (recommended)
Local--scope localCurrent project configSingle-project use (default if omitted)
Project--scope project.mcp.json in project rootTeam sharing via version control

Cursor

Add to your Cursor MCP settings (Settings > MCP Servers):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "elnora": {      "url": "https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp"    }  }}

VS Code (Copilot)

Add to your .vscode/mcp.json:

json
{  "servers": {    "elnora": {      "type": "http",      "url": "https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp"    }  }}

Codex

bash
codex --mcp-config mcp.json

With mcp.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "elnora": {      "url": "https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp"    }  }}

ChatGPT

Add as a remote MCP server in ChatGPT settings using the URL https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp.

On first connection, a browser window will open for OAuth login. Subsequent requests use the issued token automatically.

Authentication

OAuth 2.1 (Recommended)

Most MCP clients handle OAuth automatically. On first connection:

  1. A browser window opens for login
  2. If the application is a hosted (web) connector, a consent screen shows which application is requesting access and where the authorization code will be delivered — review it and approve
  3. You authenticate with your Elnora account
  4. The client receives a token and uses it for subsequent requests

No manual configuration needed.

API Key

Create an API key in your Elnora dashboard and pass it via the X-API-Key header:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "elnora": {      "url": "https://mcp.elnora.ai/mcp",      "headers": {        "X-API-Key": "YOUR_API_KEY"      }    }  }}

If your client only exposes a single bearer/token field, you can instead pass the same key as Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY — the server accepts an Elnora API key on either header.

Security best practices:

  • Never commit API keys to version control
  • Use environment variables or a secrets manager
  • Rotate keys periodically via the Elnora dashboard
  • Use OAuth when possible — it handles token refresh automatically

Examples

Generate a bioprotocol

"Use Elnora to generate a HEK 293 cell maintenance protocol"

The assistant will call elnora_generate_protocol with your description and return the generated protocol. This can take 30-120s for complex requests.

Search and read files

"List my files in Elnora, then show me the content of the most recent protocol"

Manage tasks

"Show me my active Elnora tasks and get the messages from the latest one"

Organize a project

"Create a new project called 'Q3 Assays', add a folder for each cell line, and invite [email protected]"

Troubleshooting
