Overview

AI-generated overview

Whitetape gives an assistant US building permit records as clean rows, with free search and per-row pricing beyond ten free rows a month.

What you can do
  • Search covered areas and see how many permit rows each holds
  • Count permits by state and trade, with a price estimate for the rows
  • Fetch permit rows including the property and the contractor of record
  • Pull new rows since a saved cursor for daily, non-duplicating runs
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs US building permit data — for example roofing, HVAC or solar jobs by state and trade — to size a market, find contractors of record, or track new permits over time.
Requirements
Runs locally as a Python package via uvx or pip, with an optional MCP extra. No account or API key is needed for the free tier. Paid rows need either a prepaid token in WHITETAPE_CREDIT or a Base wallet private key in WHITETAPE_WALLET_KEY with USDC, plus WHITETAPE_MAX_USD as a per-call spending cap. Network access required.
Before you install
Beyond ten free rows a month, each row costs 7 cents and payment happens inside the call, so spending is real. The wallet option asks for a private key in WHITETAPE_WALLET_KEY; use a dedicated wallet holding only USDC and keep WHITETAPE_MAX_USD low. Treat the prepaid token in WHITETAPE_CREDIT as a secret. Rows cover permits, property and contractor, not homeowners.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Whitetape in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

whitetape

Permit data for AI assistants. Nationwide government-issued building permits as clean rows in one schema. Search free. The first ten rows a month are free with nothing asked. After that 7 cents a row, paid per call by wallet (x402, USDC on Base). No account, no key, no signup. Rows carry the permit, the property, and the contractor, never the homeowner.

pip install whitetape
python
from whitetape import search, count, permits
search("annapolis") # free: the areas held, with row countscount(state="MD", trade="roofing") # free: {"count": 412, "price": 12.36, "price_per_row": 0.07}rows = permits(state="MD", trade="roofing", since=0) # the first ten are freerows["rows"][0]["contractor_name"] # the builder who pulled it

Daily, with no row twice:

python
from whitetape import rows_sincecursor = 0 # keep the last cursor between runsfor row, cursor in rows_since(state="MD", trade="roofing", cursor=cursor): ...

Paying for more than ten

By card, once: buy a prepaid link at https://whitetape.io/credit/ ($20 is 400 rows) and put its token in the environment. No account.

export WHITETAPE_CREDIT=wt_…

By wallet, per call:

pip install "whitetape[pay]"export WHITETAPE_WALLET_KEY=<the private key of a Base wallet holding USDC>export WHITETAPE_MAX_USD=5 # the most one call may spend; default 5

The payment happens inside the call. The 402 door, for a program with no library: https://whitetape.io/402/

As an MCP server for Claude

pip install "whitetape[mcp]"
json
{"mcpServers": {"whitetape": {"command": "whitetape-mcp"}}}

Three tools: search, count, permits. Add WHITETAPE_WALLET_KEY to its env for paid rows.

Command line

whitetape search annapoliswhitetape count --state MD --trade roofingwhitetape rows --state MD --trade roofing --since 0

The schema

https://whitetape.io/schema.json. Trades: roofing, hvac, plumbing, electrical, solar, pool, fence, demolition, new_construction, remodel, windows_doors, garage_adu, fire.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
