Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant capture Linux Wayland screenshots — full screen, a chosen region, or an interactive crop — and list available monitors.

What you can do
A local MCP server that wraps the Wayland screenshot tools grim and slurp. It exposes two tools: take_screenshot, which captures the full screen, a specified geometry, or an interactive region selection, returning the image inline as base64 or saving it to disk; and list_outputs, which lists available Wayland outputs or monitors. It is intended for Linux Wayland desktops such as Sway or Hyprland.
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to see the current desktop on a Linux Wayland machine — for example to capture a screen state, grab a specific region, or let the user pick an area interactively. Only relevant on Wayland desktops; it is not a general-purpose screenshot tool for other platforms.
Requirements
Runs locally as a Python package (pypi mcp-screenshot) over stdio on a Linux Wayland desktop. Requires the grim and slurp binaries, and optionally wlr-randr for list_outputs. The environment variables WAYLAND_DISPLAY and XDG_RUNTIME_DIR must be set so grim can find the compositor and socket. No authentication is declared.
Before you install
Captures whatever is on screen, which may include sensitive or private content; screenshots can be returned inline or written to disk, so consider where saved files end up. It needs the WAYLAND_DISPLAY and XDG_RUNTIME_DIR environment values, which describe the local session rather than being secrets. Desktop only; no remote or web use.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Mcp Screenshot in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
