Overview

AI-generated overview

A remote MCP server that lets an assistant screenshot a web page as an image or read it as clean Markdown, with banners, ads and popups removed.

What you can do
Capture a web page as an image when layout or visual appearance matters, with consent banners, ads, lazy images and late-rendering SPAs handled. Render a page and return its content as clean Markdown for reading or reasoning over text. Both tools fully render pages first, executing JavaScript and stripping banners, ads, chat widgets and newsletter popups, so sites that return nothing useful to a plain HTTP fetch still work. A blank capture is reported as a warning rather than presented as the page.
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to see how a page looks or to read content from JavaScript-heavy sites that plain fetching cannot handle. Choose the screenshot tool when visual layout is the answer and the Markdown tool when only the text matters.
Requirements
A remote endpoint at api.screenshotline.com over streamable HTTP. A required API key sent in the X-Access-Key header, obtained from the provider's account page; a free tier offers 500 renders a month without a card. The README also documents a local npm bridge package configured with SCREENSHOTLINE_ACCESS_KEY and an optional SCREENSHOTLINE_BASE_URL for a self-hosted renderer.
Before you install
The X-Access-Key credential is required and is sent to the hosted API, which performs all rendering, so page URLs and content pass through that third party. Usage is metered against the key's monthly render allowance. The README's local install example places the key in an environment variable, so keep it out of shared configs.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Screenshotline in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect X-Access-Key credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.MAMubeenKhan%2Fscreenshotline/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

screenshotline-mcp

An MCP server that gives an agent two tools:

  • screenshot — capture a web page as an image, for when the layout is the answer.
  • read_page — render the page, then return its text as clean Markdown, for when the text is.

Pages are fully rendered first: JavaScript executed, consent banners removed, lazy images loaded, ads, chat widgets and newsletter popups stripped. So read_page works on sites that return nothing useful to a plain HTTP fetch. A capture that comes back blank is reported as a warning, not narrated as though it were the page.

Install

Get a free key at screenshotline.com/account — 500 renders a month, no card. Then, in Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add screenshotline -e SCREENSHOTLINE_ACCESS_KEY=sl_live_... -- npx -y screenshotline-mcp

Or in any MCP client's JSON config (Claude Desktop, Cursor, and others):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "screenshotline": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "screenshotline-mcp"],      "env": { "SCREENSHOTLINE_ACCESS_KEY": "sl_live_..." }    }  }}

Self-hosted

The renderer is open source. Point the server at your own instance and no key is needed unless you configured one:

bash
SCREENSHOTLINE_BASE_URL=http://localhost:3000 npx -y screenshotline-mcp
VariableDefault
SCREENSHOTLINE_ACCESS_KEY—Your API key. Required for the hosted API.
SCREENSHOTLINE_BASE_URLhttps://api.screenshotline.comAny Screenshotline instance.

This package is only the MCP bridge — one file plus the MCP SDK. It does not download a browser; the rendering happens on the API it points at.

screenshot

Capture a screenshot of a web page and return it as an image. Handles consent banners, ads, lazy-loaded images and late-rendering SPAs. Use this when the layout, styling or visual appearance is what matters; use read_page when you only need the text.

read_page

Render a web page and return its content as clean Markdown. The page is fully rendered first - JavaScript executed, consent banners dismissed, lazy images loaded - so this works on sites that return nothing useful to a plain HTTP fetch. Prefer this over screenshot when you need to read or reason about the text.
