Search, read and edit the shards and drawings in your Netherstone vault. Needs the desktop app.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Built-in MCP server in the Netherstone desktop app that lets an assistant search, read and edit the Markdown shards and drawings in your vault.

What you can do
  • Search and read shards and drawings in a chosen vault
  • Write and edit shards, drawings and tables, and fix links
  • Browse a shard's or drawing's History and go back to earlier versions
When to use it
Useful if you keep notes and drawings in a Netherstone vault and want an AI app to look things up, draft or revise shards, tidy links, or adjust drawings and tables without leaving the app.
Requirements
Runs as a local stdio server inside the Netherstone desktop app (Windows, macOS or Linux); it is off by default and must be enabled in Settings > AI apps, where you also pick which vaults AI apps may use. Each app is connected via Connect or a copied setup snippet, then restarted.
Before you install
The assistant can write to your vault: it can edit shards, drawings and tables and change links. Deletion is not allowed and every change is saved in History first so it can be undone, but you should still review edits. Only the vaults you explicitly allow are exposed.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Netherstone in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

[Netherstone. Your knowledge, set in stone.]

Netherstone is a free, open-source desktop app for documents and drawings. Each document, called a shard, is a Markdown file in a folder you pick.

Download

Get the latest version for Windows, macOS or Linux from Releases.

On Windows, the installer shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway. Windows shows this because the installer isn't code-signed yet. We plan to sign it in a future version.

Features

  • An editor that formats Markdown as you type
  • Search, @ links and #tags
  • Drawings, images, PDFs, audio and video
  • A Gallery of every attachment in your vault
  • Charts from tables, and an Overview of your vault
  • Every version of a shard or drawing in History
  • Import from Word, PDF, HTML, Markdown and CSV, and export to PDF, Word or HTML
  • Open folders and files from the terminal (netherstone .) or your file manager
  • Free sync through your own GitHub account
  • Light, Dark and three more themes

AI apps

Netherstone has a built-in MCP server, so your AI apps can search your vault, read and write shards, fix links, edit drawings and tables, and go back through History. It's off until you turn it on:

  1. Open Settings > AI apps and turn on Connect your AI apps.
  2. Pick the vaults AI apps may use.
  3. Click Connect next to your app, then restart it. For any other app, click Copy setup and paste it into that app's MCP settings.

AI apps can't delete anything, and every change they make is saved in History first, so you can undo it.

Building from source

You need Node.js 22+, pnpm 11, Rust and the Tauri prerequisites for your OS.

sh
pnpm installpnpm tauri dev # run the apppnpm test # run the testspnpm tauri build # build an installer

The editor also has browser tests. Build the frontend once, then run them in a real Chromium (the first run downloads it):

sh
pnpm exec vite buildpnpm exec playwright install chromiumpnpm test:e2e

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
