Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant inspect and drive native Windows desktop applications through UI Automation, with capability profiles and allow/deny controls.

What you can do
Bun Uia is a local MCP server that exposes Windows UI Automation to an assistant, described as Playwright for the Windows desktop. It provides tools for inspecting and reading UI elements and for interacting with windows and input, such as clicking and dragging. Access is governed by capability profiles: readonly for inspection only, safe for read plus input and window control, and full which also enables OS-level and filesystem tools. Allow and deny lists can further restrict or extend the active profile.
When to use it
Use it when an assistant needs to observe or operate a native Windows GUI application that has no API or browser interface, for example to read on-screen state or perform repetitive window interactions. It is a desktop-only option, so it is not relevant for headless or non-Windows environments.
Requirements
Runs locally as a stdio process, started with bunx from the npm package bun-uia, so Bun and a Windows desktop session are required. No authentication is declared. Behavior is configured through environment variables: BUN_UIA_PROFILE, BUN_UIA_ALLOW, BUN_UIA_DENY, BUN_UIA_CURSOR, BUN_UIA_OS, and BUN_UIA_FS_ROOT.
Before you install
The full profile and BUN_UIA_OS enable OS-level tools such as launch_app, run_program, and open_path, plus filesystem tools read_file, write_file, and list_dir, which can change or delete data; BUN_UIA_FS_ROOT confines filesystem access to a sandbox root. Input tools can act on the real desktop, and BUN_UIA_CURSOR controls whether the real hardware cursor may be used. Review BUN_UIA_ALLOW and BUN_UIA_DENY before granting broader access.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Bun Uia in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Score

25% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
