Every Datto SaaS Protection (Backupify) client in one local database: seat audits, protection gaps

Overview

AI-generated overview

Local MCP server that mirrors Datto SaaS Protection (Backupify) client data into SQLite so an assistant can audit seats, backup gaps and health across an MSP…

What you can do
  • Sync and search a local mirror of Datto SaaS Protection clients, domains, subscriptions and seats
  • Audit seats: gaps, reconciliation against billable and Active counts, summaries and rosters
  • Rank clients by backup coverage and short backup windows, and build offboarding exit inventories
  • Plan License, Pause or Unlicense batches without sending, then apply a confirmed bulk seat change
  • Run local-state commands such as sync, export, learnings and profile
When to use it
Useful for MSP operators who need fleet-wide answers the Datto portal only shows one client at a time, such as which seats are unprotected, where seat counts disagree with billing, or which clients rank worst on backup coverage.
Requirements
Runs locally as a desktop process (stdio), installed via the .mcpb package or the vendor installer script. Requires a Datto REST API key pair from the Partner Portal, set as DATTO_SAAS_PUBLIC_KEY and DATTO_SAAS_SECRET_KEY, plus network access to api.datto.com. HTTP mode additionally needs DATTO_SAAS_MCP_HTTP_TOKEN and TLS certificates for non-local addresses.
Before you install
Unofficial, community-built and in beta, not affiliated with Datto. The bulk seat change command licenses, pauses or unlicenses up to 100 seats per call and changes what is backed up and billed; preview with a plan or dry run and require confirmation. Set DATTO_SAAS_READ_ONLY or DATTO_SAAS_MCP_READ_ONLY to restrict writes, and scope the API key pair narrowly. A local SQLite copy of API responses is kept unless DATTO_SAAS_NO_LOCAL_DATA is set.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Datto SaaS Protection MCP in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

Datto SaaS Protection + AI - for ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini, and any agent that speaks MCP

Unofficial. Community-built Claude Code Skill and MCP server for the Datto SaaS Protection API. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Datto, Inc.

[Datto SaaS Protection demo - animated preview]

▶ Watch the 30-second demo - demo data is simulated; every command shown exists in the real CLI.

Also from Servosity. Backup & DR is Servosity's own field - the first-party Servosity connector brings this same fleet-wide, local-mirror approach (fleet attention, stale backups, restores, QBR reporting) to Servosity Backup and DR.

Comparing backup vendors? One of our MSP partners told us, "My guys now spend a tenth of the time on backups." Fixing is included in every Servosity co-managed backup plan, and our engineers tell you what they did. See how co-managed backup works

Every Datto SaaS Protection (Backupify) client in one local database: seat audits, protection gaps, backup health ranking, exit inventories and plan-first bulk seat changes. Works with the AI you already use - ChatGPT (Plus/Pro+), Claude Desktop, Codex, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and GitHub Copilot - plus Microsoft 365 Copilot / Copilot Studio and Google Gemini via the remote path. Free, open source, runs on your laptop. Built for MSP owners. No code required.

Works with your agent

The six agents MSP owners actually use (self-serve, works today):

Your AI agentHow to install the Datto SaaS Protection skill
Claude DesktopRun installer, then Settings > Extensions to register datto-saas-mcp (no JSON editing).
ChatGPT (paid plans)Run installer, host datto-saas-mcp over HTTPS with DATTO_SAAS_MCP_HTTP_TOKEN set, then register it as a Developer Mode connector if your connector settings can send the bearer token.
Codex CLIPaste the install prompt below.
Claude CodePaste the install prompt below.
Claude CoworkPaste the install prompt below.
GitHub Copilot (VS Code)Run installer, add datto-saas-mcp to mcp.json under the servers key, then pick Agent mode.

For ChatGPT, run datto-saas-mcp --transport http with DATTO_SAAS_MCP_HTTP_TOKEN set, on an HTTPS host; every request sends that token. See mcp-install.md.

Also for the Microsoft and Google stacks

Big install base, but an honest heads-up: these are the remote / enterprise path, not the local binary you just installed.

AgentWhat it takes
Microsoft 365 Copilot / Copilot StudioNot self-serve. Host datto-saas-mcp over HTTPS with DATTO_SAAS_MCP_HTTP_TOKEN set, then wire it into Copilot Studio (Tools > Add a tool > Model Context Protocol > Server URL) or a declarative agent, if it can send the bearer token. Needs a Copilot Studio license + tenant admin. See mcp-install.md.
Google GeminiGemini CLI is local - same as Claude Code. The Gemini app is remote - same HTTPS path as ChatGPT. See mcp-install.md.

Skill-native agents (also covered): Hermes and OpenClaw read this skill's SKILL.md directly and speak MCP - see their install sections below. Also works with Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Continue.dev, and Zed via MCP. Full per-tool wire-up: docs/which-agent.md.

Run more than one agent? Install across all 51+ supported agents in one command: npx skills add Servosity/msp-skills@latest (requires Node.js, then run the per-skill installer for the CLI/MCP binaries). See docs/which-agent.md.

Install in 60 seconds

Fastest for Claude Desktop - one-click .mcpb

Download Datto SaaS Protection MCP (.mcpb) - then open Claude Desktop > Settings > Extensions and select the file. One click, no JSON, no shell. (Browse every Datto SaaS Protection release on the releases page.)

Prefer the Claude Code plugin? Add the marketplace once, then install - works immediately, no directory listing required:

/plugin marketplace add Servosity/msp-skills/plugin install datto-saas@msp-skills

Path A - paste one prompt into your AI agent (recommended)

Copy this into Claude Code, Codex CLI, or Claude Cowork:

Install the Datto SaaS Protection Skill and MCP server from Servosity/msp-skills in this agent workspace. If this workspace uses a POSIX shell (macOS, Linux, WSL, or Bash), run bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.sh). If it uses Windows PowerShell, run iwr -useb https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.ps1 | iex. Then authenticate per the README and run datto-saas-cli --help to explore.

The same prompt works in any agent that can run shell.

Path B - run the installer yourself

Windows (PowerShell):

powershell
iwr -useb https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.ps1 | iex

macOS / Linux:

bash
bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.sh)

The installer drops both datto-saas-cli (the CLI) and datto-saas-mcp (the MCP server) into your user bin path. Claude Code, Codex, and Cowork discover the Skill via SKILL.md in this directory.

Verify:

bash
datto-saas-cli --version

Upgrade to the latest version

The installer always fetches the current release - re-run it to upgrade:

macOS / Linux:

bash
bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.sh)

Windows (PowerShell):

powershell
iwr -useb https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/datto-saas/install.ps1 | iex

Claude Desktop .mcpb users: download the latest .mcpb (top of this section) and re-select it in Settings > Extensions. Claude Code plugin users: /plugin update datto-saas@msp-skills.

Add to Claude Desktop, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Microsoft 365 Copilot, or another MCP client

After the installer runs, see mcp-install.md and docs/which-agent.md for the per-agent wire-up - one section per agent, including the GitHub Copilot servers key and the remote Microsoft 365 Copilot / Copilot Studio path. Claude Desktop's Settings > Extensions panel is the simplest path; the MCP config block (for users who prefer editing JSON) is documented in mcp-install.md.

Install for Hermes

From the Hermes CLI:

bash
hermes skills install servosity/msp-skills/skills/datto-saas --force

Inside a Hermes chat session:

/skills install servosity/msp-skills/skills/datto-saas --force

Hermes speaks MCP natively, so it can also use the datto-saas-mcp server directly - same install path, same env vars.

Install for OpenClaw

Tell your OpenClaw agent (copy this):

Install the datto-saas skill from https://github.com/servosity/msp-skills/tree/main/skills/datto-saas. The skill defines how its required CLI (datto-saas-cli) can be installed via the openclaw: frontmatter block.

OpenClaw isn't generally available yet; the frontmatter wiring is pre-shipped and will activate the moment OpenClaw launches.

Authenticate

Set the credentials the CLI needs (from your Datto SaaS Protection portal):

bash
DATTO_SAAS_PUBLIC_KEY=<value> DATTO_SAAS_SECRET_KEY=<value> datto-saas-cli doctor

Windows (PowerShell):

powershell
$env:DATTO_SAAS_PUBLIC_KEY = "<value>"; $env:DATTO_SAAS_SECRET_KEY = "<value>"; datto-saas-cli doctor

doctor checks config, paths and API reachability, and sends the key pair to the API root (the reachability check) and one read endpoint (the activity log), so a rejected key shows up as a FAIL Credentials: ERROR rejected row and a key without access as WARN scope-limited. It exits 0 even then, so scripts should add --fail-on error (or --fail-on warn).

What this skill does

Question your MSP keeps askingCommand
Which seats across every client are unprotected, newest first?datto-saas-cli seats gaps --since 30d --agent
Where does Datto's seatsUsed disagree with billable and Active seats?datto-saas-cli seats reconcile --only-flagged --agent
Which clients rank worst on backup coverage?datto-saas-cli backup-health --below 95 --agent
How many seats does each client have, by type and state?datto-saas-cli seats summary --agent
One seat table for the fleet, with domains and subscription idsdatto-saas-cli seats roster --state Unprotected,Paused --agent
What must I check before a client leaves SaaS Protection?datto-saas-cli exit-inventory 123456 --data-source live --agent
Which batches would license a client's unprotected seats? (sends nothing)datto-saas-cli seats bulk-plan --action License --state Unprotected --customer 123456 --agent

Run datto-saas-cli sync first: the fleet commands read the local mirror.

What makes this different

Most Datto SaaS Protection integrations and MCP servers proxy each question into a live API call. That's fine for one record. It dies at scale, when you're asking "which users joined a tenant in the last month and are not backed up, across all 40 clients".

This skill syncs Datto SaaS Protection into a local SQLite mirror with full-text search. Aggregate questions become one local SQL join: instant, offline, and the AI sees the answer, not the raw data. Compound commands like seats reconcile, seats gaps and exit-inventory join across clients, domains, subscriptions and seats - work a stateless API wrapper can't do.

The pain this closes

Datto's own seat-management documentation spells out the gap: when Auto-Add is off, or a client's seat cap has been reached, a newly discovered user is added without backups enabled (Exploring Seat Management features). The portal shows that per client. Across a fleet, nobody sees it until a restore request comes in for a user who was never protected. The same seat counts drive the Datto bill, so a seat that is billed but archived, or Active but not billable, is a margin leak that only a manual reconciliation finds.

  • seats gaps --since 30d lists every unprotected seat across all clients, newest first.
  • seats reconcile --only-flagged shows, per client, where seatsUsed disagrees with billable and Active seats before you invoice.
  • backup-health --below 95 ranks clients worst first by coverage and short backup windows.
  • exit-inventory <client> builds one offboarding manifest with a blockers checklist.
  • seats bulk-plan turns any of the above into License, Pause or Unlicense batches without sending anything.

See pain-point.md for the longer narrative.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with ChatGPT?

Yes, on Plus, Pro, Team, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans (Free tier does not yet expose Developer Mode). ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers over HTTPS, not local stdio binaries. The Datto SaaS Protection MCP server runs locally over stdio by default. Its HTTP mode (datto-saas-mcp --transport http) serves http://127.0.0.1:7777/mcp, refuses to start until DATTO_SAAS_MCP_HTTP_TOKEN is set, requires Authorization: Bearer <token> on every request, and needs --tls-cert/--tls-key for any other address. See mcp-install.md. Step-by-step in mcp-install.md.

Does this work with Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Copilot, or Gemini?

Yes - all of them speak MCP. Cross-tool install commands are in the matrix above and the deep-dive in docs/which-agent.md.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The recommended install is to paste one sentence into Claude Code or Codex - your agent reads SKILL.md and does the install. The fallback is a one-line installer per OS (bash or PowerShell). Neither path requires writing code. You'll enter your Datto SaaS Protection credentials once.

Is my Datto SaaS Protection data safe?

Your data stays on your machine. The CLI and MCP server are local binaries. The SQLite mirror sits in a directory under your user account. The AI agent only sees what the CLI returns - typically a query result, not raw bulk data. Credentials are read from your environment or your agent's config; never bundled into this repo or transmitted anywhere by MSP Skills.

Which Datto API key does it need?

The Datto REST API key pair from the Partner Portal (Admin > Integrations > API Keys): DATTO_SAAS_PUBLIC_KEY and DATTO_SAAS_SECRET_KEY, sent as HTTP Basic auth to api.datto.com. One partner key sees every client you manage.

Can it change seats or billing on its own?

Only one command writes: seats bulk-change, which licenses, pauses or unlicenses up to 100 seats per call. Over MCP it returns a preview and sends only when confirm is boolean true, and DATTO_SAAS_MCP_READ_ONLY=1 refuses it. In the CLI it sends when you run it, so preview with --dry-run and plan the batches first with seats bulk-plan, which sends nothing. Over MCP, sync, export and the tools that teach or amend what the CLI has learned also preview and run only when confirm is boolean true.

Does it replace the SaaS Protection portal?

No. Restores, retention settings and Auto-Add rules stay in the portal. This skill answers the fleet-wide seat and backup questions the portal shows one client at a time.

What does it cost?

Free. Apache-2.0 licensed. You pay only for whichever AI agent you use (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, etc.), and that's billed by your AI provider, not by us.

The strongest control is the scope you grant the Datto SaaS Protection credentials - the CLI can only do what the credentials are permitted to do. Full details, including how to lock it down, are in governance.md.

Status

Beta. Validated against the Datto SaaS Protection API surface and being validated with MSPs running it live against their own production tenant in our weekly Build Sessions. RSVP at compoundingteams.com/build-sessions.
