Requirements
Runs locally via npx, so Node.js 18 or newer is needed. Requires a Noun Project account and API app credentials, supplied as NOUN_CONSUMER_KEY and NOUN_CONSUMER_SECRET, plus NOUN_API_TIER set to FREE or PAID. Network access to The Noun Project API.
Before you install
The server needs your Noun Project consumer key and secret, which are passed as environment variables. Downloads and icon lookups consume API quota; the free tier allows 2,000 service and 150 icon calls per month, and PAID is pay-per-use, so usage can cost money. It writes icon files to paths you choose. It is community-maintained and not affiliated with The Noun Project.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Noun Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Ask for icons in plain words. Describe what you need — "a solid coffee cup, public domain" — and your AI assistant searches The Noun Project, picks a match, and downloads SVG or PNG into your project. Works with Cursor, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code.

Get started

You need Node.js 18+ and Noun Project API keys (create an app — a free account works). Set NOUN_API_TIER to FREE (2,000 service / 150 icon calls per month) or PAID. Quota details: docs/available-tools.md.

How it works

  1. You type what you want in plain language.
  2. The AI searches first — search_icons is a cheap service call and already returns IDs, license, and thumbnails.
  3. Download only when you need a file — each download_icon / get_icon spends an icon call.

Hit a quota error? Ask for check_usage, then wait or refine. Common fixes: docs/troubleshooting.md.
