Design tokens, components, icons, and a11y data via MCP. For Cursor, Claude, and Windsurf.
Overview
Basalt serves a Git-backed design system — tokens, components, icons and accessibility data — to AI coding tools over a remote MCP endpoint.
- What you can do
- Query design tokens stored in the DTCG format, including primitive, semantic and component tiers
- Resolve token reference chains so the assistant works with real values instead of guessing
- Look up components, icons and accessibility data from the design system
- Use the results while writing UI code in tools such as Cursor, Claude Code or Windsurf
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant writes or edits front-end code against a specific design system and needs the project's actual token names and values, component definitions or accessibility data rather than invented ones.
- Requirements
- A remote MCP endpoint at basalt.run, reachable over SSE, with an Authorization header carrying a Basalt API key (a free key is available from the service's settings). No local package or runtime is needed.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Basalt in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Web executable via SSE. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.
Use with an agent
Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.
Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.basalt-run%2Fbasalt/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.Other MCP clients
Add this to your client's mcpServers config.

Basalt Design System
Design tokens in Git. Readable by AI. Beautiful to edit.
This repo is managed by Basalt — a design system platform that stores tokens, components, and documentation in Git and serves them to AI coding tools via MCP.
What's in this repo
All tokens use the DTCG 2025.10 format (W3C standard).
Using these tokens with AI tools
Basalt serves this design system to Cursor, Claude Code, Claude Design, and Windsurf via an MCP server. AI tools query your real token values instead of guessing.
See MCP.md for setup instructions and available tools.
Quick config (Cursor / Claude Code / Windsurf):

Token architecture
Three tiers, each referencing the layer above:
Primitive → raw values (color.orange.500 = #F97316)
Semantic → intent + theming (color.action.default → color.orange.500)
Component → scoped to UI elements (button.background.default → color.action.default)
AI tools resolve the full chain automatically via MCP.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
