Read-only git statistics for a local repository: log, blame ownership, churn, authors, large files.
Overview
Read-only git statistics for a local repository: log, blame ownership, churn, authors and large files.
- What it does
- Exposes read-only git statistics for a repository you name. Tools include repo_summary (branch, HEAD, remotes with credentials stripped, counts), git_log (commits with hash, author, date, subject and optional files), blame_summary (lines and latest commit per author for one file), churn (files ranked by commits with lines added and removed), authors (commits per email with first and last dates) and large_files (largest blobs in a tree or across history). Commands run without a shell from a fixed argument list, with validated paths and revisions, a 20 s timeout and an output cap.
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to inspect a local repository's history and ownership without changing it: reviewing who wrote which lines, finding churn hotspots, or seeing what makes a clone large.
- Requirements
- Local process over stdio; requires git on PATH. Install via npx (pin the version) or run the container image with docker. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are declared.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Git Insights in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
git-insights MCP server
Read-only statistics for a local git repository: log, blame ownership, churn, authors and large files. Every command is spawned without a shell from a fixed argument list, with validated paths and revisions, a 20 s timeout, an output cap and GIT_OPTIONAL_LOCKS=0. Nothing is written, fetched or checked out.
Part of dev-mcp-servers. Stdio transport only; the server never opens a port.
