Tmdb Mcp Server
io.github.cyanheadsPublished by GitHub account cyanheadsv0.2.0Updated Oct 30, 2026
Search, detail, and discovery for movies, TV, and people on The Movie Database (TMDB).
Overview
Searches and retrieves movie, TV and person metadata from The Movie Database (TMDB), including credits, ratings, trailers and regional streaming availability.
- What you can do
- Search movies, TV shows and people by name and resolve names to TMDB ids
- Read full movie and TV detail: synopsis, cast and crew, trailers, ratings, keywords, recommendations
- Read season episode lists and person biographies with paged filmographies
- Discover titles by genre, date, vote, cast, network, provider or runtime filters, and list trending titles
- Check region-scoped streaming availability (flatrate, rent, buy, ads, free) via JustWatch
- Expose movie, TV and person records as injectable resources plus an agent guide skill
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant needs reliable film and TV facts for recommendations, watchlists, trivia or research, or when you want to filter titles by criteria and check where they stream in a given region.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio via npx (Node.js), or as a Docker image or source build with Bun 1.4.0+ or Node.js 24+. Requires a free TMDB account and a TMDB v4 API Read Access Token supplied as TMDB_API_KEY. Optional settings cover language, transport, HTTP port, auth mode and logging.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Tmdb Mcp Server in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Features
Built on @cyanheads/mcp-ts-core: stdio and Streamable HTTP transports, pluggable auth (none / jwt / oauth), swappable storage (in-memory, filesystem, Supabase, Cloudflare KV/R2/D1), structured logging with optional OpenTelemetry tracing.
TMDB-specific:
- Typed client for the TMDB v3 REST API, authenticated with a v4 Read Access Token
- Image paths resolved to full image URLs; missing paths omit the field
- Genre ids resolved to genre names, so list results are readable without an extra call
- Detail tools return credits, videos, recommendations, keywords, and external ids in one request
- Region-aware streaming availability backed by JustWatch; region is always an explicit input
Agent-friendly output:
- TMDB attribution on every response in
enrichment.attribution - List responses carry total counts, page/total-pages, and a notice of the filters actually applied
- Empty results return normally with recovery guidance, not as errors
- Watch-provider results always state the region; capped filmographies disclose their full totals
Getting started
A TMDB API Read Access Token is required. Create a free TMDB account, then copy the API Read Access Token (a v4 JWT) from your API settings — this server authenticates v3 endpoints with Authorization: Bearer <token>, not the legacy ?api_key= query parameter.
Add it to Claude Code:
For other clients, add this to the MCP configuration file:
For Docker or a source build, see Running the server.
Configuration
All configuration is validated at startup via Zod schemas. Key environment variables:
See .env.example for the full list of optional overrides.
Running the server
Local development
Requires Bun v1.4.0 or higher (or Node.js v24+).
-
Build and run:
-
Run checks and tests:
Docker
The image defaults to HTTP transport, stateless sessions, and logs to /var/log/tmdb-mcp-server. For stdio, use docker run -i --rm -e MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE=stdio -e TMDB_API_KEY=your-token ghcr.io/cyanheads/tmdb-mcp-server:latest. Build locally with docker build -t tmdb-mcp-server .; OpenTelemetry peers are included by default, or omitted with --build-arg OTEL_ENABLED=false.
Project structure
Development guide
See AGENTS.md (or CLAUDE.md, the same content) for development guidelines and architectural rules. The short version:
- Handlers throw, framework catches — no
try/catchin tool logic - Use
ctx.logfor request-scoped logging, ctx.statefor tenant-scoped storage - Register new tools and resources via the barrels in
src/mcp-server/*/definitions/index.ts - Wrap external API calls: validate raw → normalize to domain type → return output schema; never fabricate missing fields

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
