Scan and generate barcodes and QR codes.
Overview
Local MCP server that lets an assistant decode barcodes and QR codes from images and generate QR code or barcode PNGs.
- What you can do
- Decode a barcode or QR code from an image file or base64 data, returning the decoded text and detected format
- Generate a QR code PNG from text or a URL, with configurable error correction
- Generate a barcode PNG in 25+ formats such as Code 128, EAN-13 and UPC-A
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to read a barcode or QR code from a photo, create QR codes for links, produce barcode images for shipping labels or tracking numbers, or verify printed codes before a lookup.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local process via npx from the npm package barcode-scanner-mcp over stdio; the MCP_TRANSPORT environment variable is required. No authentication is declared. Desktop-only; not available as a web executable.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Barcode Scanner in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
barcode-scanner-mcp
MCP server for scanning and generating barcodes and QR codes.
Use Cases
Decode a barcode from a photo: "What does this barcode say?" → reads the image, detects the barcode format, and returns the decoded text.
Generate a QR code: "Create a QR code for https://example.com" → generates a PNG QR code image with configurable error correction.
Create shipping labels: "Generate a Code 128 barcode for tracking number 1Z999AA10123456784" → produces a barcode image in the specified format.
Verify printed barcodes: "Scan this product barcode and look up the item" → decodes the barcode and returns the text for further lookup.
Setup
Follow the instructions on install-mcp, which generates the right config for your MCP client (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, VS Code, and more).

Score
50% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
