Design-patent screening, design-around and drawings for US, CN and EU products.

What you can do
  • Screen a product's appearance against published design patents in the US, China and Europe
  • Suggest design changes that make the product visibly different, and compare versions
  • Prepare patent drawings and a filing package for your own application
  • Check run status, list cases and review decision cards
  • Print a ready-made MCP config snippet for common coding assistants
When to use it
For people who sell or design physical products and want an early check of whether a look is too close to existing design patents before investing in a design or filing. It is a starting point, not a legal opinion.
Requirements
Runs locally as a Python package (Python 3.11 or 3.12, installed via uv tool or pip) and is started with the designaround mcp command. An account is needed: designaround onboard stores a trial key in the OS keychain. The hosted server at designaround.elidot.com handles the account, registry searches and hosted AI models, so network access is required. Paid tools need a credit cap.
Before you install
Paid tools consume credits, so set a credit cap. Product models, cases and the CAD engine stay in a local folder, but account data, registry searches and hosted AI model calls go to the vendor's server. It is software, not a law firm: it gives no legal advice or freedom-to-operate opinion, and a registered patent attorney or agent should review and file any application.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open DesignAround in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

DesignAround

DesignAround is a command-line tool for people who sell or design physical products. It checks a product's appearance against published design patents in the US, China and Europe, helps change the design until it is visibly different, and prepares patent drawings and a filing package for your own application.

It runs on your computer: a CLI, a chat workbench, an agent Skill and an MCP server. The CAD engine, your models and your cases stay in ~/.designaround. The server at designaround.elidot.com handles your account, registry searches and hosted AI models.

DesignAround is software, not a law firm, and does not give legal advice or freedom-to-operate opinions. A screen is a starting point. A registered patent attorney or agent you choose reviews and files an application.

Install

Python 3.11 or 3.12 is required. Install from PyPI:

bash
uv tool install designaround --python 3.12# or: python3.12 -m pip install designarounddesignaround onboard

The same packages are also on the website package index:

bash
uv tool install designaround --python 3.12 --index https://designaround.elidot.com/simple/

This repository is the source for those client packages (packages/core, packages/engine, packages/cli), the agent Skill (skills/designaround) and the agent runtime sources the CLI bundles (agents/).

designaround onboard stores a trial key in your OS keychain. designaround --version prints the version on your computer.

MCP

bash
designaround mcpdesignaround mcp --print-config

designaround mcp serves seven tools on stdio: screen, design_around, run_status, viewpack, compare, case_list and decision_card. Paid tools need a credit cap. --print-config prints the snippet for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Claude Desktop and VS Code.

Skill

bash
designaround skill install claude-code

The same command accepts cursor, codex, gemini-cli, opencode, openclaw, kiro or all. The Skill text in this repository is skills/designaround/SKILL.md.

SourceWeft started this package once in an isolated sandbox, without credentials, to list its tools. That failed: the server did not answer in time.

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
