Requirements
Runs locally via npx as an npm package, so Node 18 or later is needed. Requires an Equalang account and an API key supplied as the EQUALANG_API_KEY environment variable (or in a per-machine config file). Network access to the Equalang service; jobs are paid with account credits.
Before you install
Files and text are uploaded to the Equalang service, so avoid sending confidential material you cannot share with a third party. Jobs consume paid credits; formula optimization adds 10 credits per PDF page. The API key is a secret: keep it in the environment variable, not in a URL or shared config. Translation and transcription write output files next to the source.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Equalang Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

  • Languages — 152 for text and documents; the live language list reflects the current deployment. Omit the source language to detect it automatically.
  • PDF formulas — Formula optimization is optional and off by default. Enable it only for PDF files. translate_file → optimize_math_formula: true Adds 10 credits per original PDF page at the default rate. Use the same option when estimating the cost. estimate_cost → optimize_math_formula: true

Get a key

Sign up at https://equalang.com and create a key at https://equalang.com/api-keys. New accounts start with free credits, enough to put a document through.

The key goes in an environment variable of the MCP client's config, never in a URL. Without a key the server still starts and lists its tools; a tool that needs the key answers with how to get one.

The key can also live once per machine, in ~/.config/equalang/.env, which the Equalang skill reads too:

The server takes EQUALANG_API_KEY from its environment first, and reads the file only when the environment has none: a key in the client config wins, and with the file in place the client config needs no env.

Language codes look like en, zh-CN, ja; list_languages has the full list. A job takes minutes - a tool waits up to wait_seconds (50 s by default, 240 at most), then hands back a job id for check_job to pick up.
