Run governed SQL queries and inspect database schemas from MCP agents.
Overview
Local MCP server that lets an assistant run governed SQL queries and inspect database schemas, with row limits and a safe mode on by default.
- What you can do
- Run SQL queries against configured database connections, with results capped by a maximum row count.
- Inspect database schemas so the assistant can see available tables and structure before querying.
- Apply a safe mode that blocks mutating SQL unless it is explicitly turned off.
- Load connection profiles from a JSON environment variable for headless use.
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to explore and query your databases from a local MCP client, with read-only behavior and bounded result sizes by default. Suited to schema inspection and ad-hoc analysis rather than unattended write access.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio, started with npx from the npm package sql-preview, so Node.js is needed. Connection profiles are supplied through the SQL_PREVIEW_CONNECTIONS environment variable as a JSON array. Optional settings: SQL_PREVIEW_MAX_ROWS (default 10000) and SQL_PREVIEW_MCP_SAFE_MODE (default true). Desktop client only.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open SQL Preview in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declared10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
