Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant search news articles and fetch top headlines from GNews' index of 80,000+ sources.

What it does
This is a hosted MCP server that exposes the GNews API. It provides two tools: search, which finds news articles by keyword combination, and top_headlines, which returns headlines by category and country. Results can be limited by language and maximum count, and the examples show queries such as climate change in English or technology headlines from the United States.
When to use it
Use it when an assistant needs current news coverage, keyword-based article search, or headlines filtered by category and country. It suits research, monitoring, and summarization tasks that depend on recent reporting rather than general web search.
Requirements
A remote MCP client that supports streamable HTTP, such as Claude Code or Gemini CLI. A valid GNews API key is required and must be sent in the X-Api-Key HTTP header; a free key can be obtained from the provider. No local installation or package is needed, and an HTTPS connection is recommended.
Before you install
The X-Api-Key header carries a secret API key that should be treated like a password and never shared. The server is a proxy that does not store keys, but the key is forwarded to the GNews API on each request. The hosted server records anonymous usage statistics per tool call, including tool name, client name and version, outcome, duration, and parameters such as lang, country, category, max, page and sortby; the key is stored only as a one-way hash and search queries are not recorded.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open GNews in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config.

README

๐Ÿ“ก GNews API MCP Server

This document describes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that exposes the GNews API.

This server is already deployed and publicly accessible, so you don't need to install anything. You just need to connect it to your compatible MCP client (Claude Code, Gemini CLI, etc.).

๐Ÿ”‘ GNews API Key

To use this server, you need a valid GNews API key.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Get your API key here

The API key must be provided in the following way:

  • Via an HTTP header X-Api-Key

๐Ÿ”— MCP Integration

This server is listed in the official MCP Registry as io.github.gnews-io/gnews.

With Claude Code

Add the server to your Claude Code configuration with the following command:

bash
claude mcp add --transport http gnews_api https://mcp.gnews.io/ --header "X-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Available Tools

Once the server is connected, the following two tools are available:

  • search: Search for news articles through a combination of keywords.
  • top_headlines: Get top headlines by category and country.

๐Ÿ“„ Usage Examples

Search for articles

This example searches for the 5 latest English articles on climate change:

json
{  "tool": "search",  "args": {    "q": "climate change",    "lang": "en",    "max": 5  }}

Get latest headlines

This example retrieves the 5 top headlines from the "technology" category in the United States:

json
{  "tool": "top_headlines",  "args": {    "category": "technology",    "country": "us",    "max": 5  }}

๐Ÿ”’ Security

  • Never share your API key. Treat it like a password.
  • This server acts as a proxy: it does not store any API keys. Your key is transmitted directly to GNews API with each request.
  • Always use an HTTPS connection to communicate with the server to ensure your key is encrypted in transit.
  • The hosted server records anonymous usage statistics for each tool call: tool name, MCP client name and version, success or error, duration, and the lang, country, category, max, page and sortby parameters. Your API key is only recorded as a one-way hash, and your search queries are never recorded.

๐Ÿ“‹ Client Prerequisites

  • A compatible MCP client (e.g., Claude Code).
  • The latest version of Gemini CLI is recommended for optimal compatibility.
