Real, source-checked kids' events and places in 42 US metros, linked to grassyknees.com.
Overview
Read-only MCP server that lets an assistant find source-checked kids' events, classes and places in 42 US metros from the Grassy Knees directory.
- What you can do
- List the 42 covered metro areas with the ids used by the other tools
- Search one metro's listings by date window, kind, free-only, age, category or keywords, soonest first
- Fetch a single listing by its grassyknees.com URL or id for schedule, venue and ages
- Pull a seasonal guide (Halloween, Christmas, ice skating, Easter) for a metro or all metros as trimmed Markdown
- When to use it
- Useful when someone asks what to do with kids in a US metro — weekend plans, free activities, age-specific events, seasonal outings — and you want real listings with dates and locations rather than generic suggestions.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio via npx with Node.js 20 or later, or as a Docker image; no API key or account needed. Network access to grassyknees.com is required; the optional GRASSYKNEES_ORIGIN variable points it at another deployment.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Grassy Knees in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
Grassy Knees MCP server
Website: https://grassyknees.com
A small, read-only Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants answer questions like "what can I do with my kids in Denver this weekend?" with real listings from Grassy Knees. Grassy Knees is a free directory of kids' and family events, classes and places across 42 US metro areas. Every listing is researched from the organizer's own page and shows the date it was last checked.
Every result says what the listing is, where and when, ages, and its grassyknees.com page URL. Price, availability, the last-checked date, registration, the organizer's links and contact details are on that page. Each call returns at most 20 listings.
Example prompts
- "What can I do with my kids in Denver this weekend?"
- "Free things for a 4-year-old in Washington, DC in the next 7 days."
- "Any STEM events for a 10-year-old in Seattle on Saturday?"
- "Where can we go ice skating near Chicago?"
- "Halloween events for kids in Austin."
- "Tell me more about https://grassyknees.com/denver/activities/rock-creek-farm-pumpkin-patch-and-corn-maze--listing-69c7739ea9ac9cfaddb69622"

Cursor
Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project):
Any other MCP client that runs stdio servers works the same way: the command is npx -y grassyknees-mcp.
Or with Docker: build the image with docker build -t grassyknees-mcp . and use docker run -i --rm grassyknees-mcp as the command.
Tools
Dates are in the metro's local time. this-weekend means Friday to Sunday, the same window as the site's /<metro>/this-weekend page.
Sample transcript
From npm run smoke, run against the live site on 2026-10-28 (trimmed):
How it gets data
Read-only, public endpoints on grassyknees.com, one request at a time:
GET /api/activities?city=<metro>&fields=listfor searches (one metro's current list, filtered and capped locally to 20 results),GET /api/activities?ids=<id>forget_activity,- the site's Markdown pages (
/<metro>/<season>.md) forseasonal_guide.
Responses are cached in memory for 10 minutes, so follow-up questions about the same metro don't refetch. Requests send User-Agent: grassyknees-mcp/<version>. Nothing is written to the site and no personal data is sent.
Set GRASSYKNEES_ORIGIN to point the server at another deployment (for testing).

Score
50% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
