Parser facts about a codebase: architecture, call graphs, control flow, effects, beliefs
Overview
Local read-only MCP server that gives an assistant deterministic parser facts about a codebase: architecture, symbols, call graphs, control flow, effects and…
- What you can do
- Inspect codebase architecture and list symbols in a file or by search
- Trace call graphs and control flow graphs for routines
- Read source code for symbols and routines
- Query parser-derived effects and the engine's beliefs about each routine
- Optionally record belief corrections when the server is started with the corrections flag
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant needs grounded, parser-derived answers about a repository's structure and call relationships instead of guessing from file reads, especially for Go, COBOL with copybooks, CA Gen, Java, TypeScript and Python codebases.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local stdio process, typically launched with npx and a root path argument pointing at the repository. Node.js/npm is needed for the package route, or Go to install the binary directly. On first run it downloads a platform-specific binary from the gen-system release and verifies its SHA-256 checksum; later runs work offline. Optional environment variables UNDERSTAND_MCP_BINARY and UNDERSTAND_MCP_CACHE control the binary path and cache folder. No authentication declared.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open gen-system Understand in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
gen-understand
gen-system's Understand engine as an MCP server. It gives an AI agent parser facts about a codebase: the architecture, symbols, call graphs, control flow graphs, effects, source and the beliefs gen-system holds about each routine. No model writes these answers; deterministic parsers for Go, COBOL with copybooks, CA Gen, Java, TypeScript and Python do.
The server is read only. It runs locally and sends nothing anywhere.

How this package works
The server is a Go binary. On first run this package downloads the binary for your platform from
the gen-system release of the same version,
checks its SHA-256 against the release's checksums.txt, and caches it. Later runs start at once
and work offline. Builds exist for Linux, macOS and Windows, on x64 and arm64.
Without npm, install the binary with Go: go install github.com/hpdkhoa/gen-system/generator/cmd/understand-mcp@latest.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
