Overview

AI-generated overview

Converts PDF, DOCX, PPTX and XLSX documents from a URL or local file into Markdown for an AI assistant, via the paid Unfold API.

What you can do
  • Convert one document to Markdown, from a public URL or a local file path, with a cap on returned characters
  • Get the API's JSON response, including remaining monthly quota when the marketplace reports it
  • Receive plain-language errors for a refused key, exhausted quota or unprocessable input, with next steps
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to read the contents of PDF, Word, PowerPoint or Excel files and work with them as Markdown text, whether the file is online or on the local machine.
Requirements
Runs locally over stdio with uvx (Python 3.10+, installed by uv). Needs a RapidAPI or api.market key supplied as RAPIDAPI_KEY or API_MARKET_KEY; HFL_MARKETPLACE picks the marketplace when both keys are set. Network access to the Unfold API is required. Local files are limited to 10 MB and output to 500,000 characters.
Before you install
The Unfold API is paid, with a free plan of 15 requests a month; every tool call counts as one request on your plan. Local files given by path are uploaded to the API for that request, so avoid sending confidential documents. The key is sent only to the chosen marketplace, but it is a secret that must be kept out of shared configuration.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Unfold Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

Unfold MCP server

[M8ven Score] [CI] [PyPI] [Python 3.10+] [License: MIT]

Give your AI agent the content of PDF, Word (DOCX), PowerPoint (PPTX) and Excel (XLSX) documents as Markdown, from a URL or a local file.

The server is open source (MIT). It calls the Unfold API, which is paid, with a free plan.

  • You use your own key, from RapidAPI or api.market.
  • Every tool call is one request on your plan.
  • The free Basic plan has 15 requests a month, with a hard limit, so it never runs up a bill.

1. Get a key

marketplace
RapidAPIplans
api.marketstore

2. Add the server to your MCP client

The server runs locally over stdio with uv. Put your key in its environment.

JSON configuration (Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and most clients):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "unfold": {      "command": "uvx",      "args": ["--from", "hybridforgelab-unfold-mcp", "unfold-mcp"],      "env": { "RAPIDAPI_KEY": "your-rapidapi-key" }    }  }}

Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add unfold --env RAPIDAPI_KEY=your-rapidapi-key -- uvx --from hybridforgelab-unfold-mcp unfold-mcp

Environment

variablemeaning
RAPIDAPI_KEYyour RapidAPI key
API_MARKET_KEYyour api.market key, used when RAPIDAPI_KEY is not set
HFL_MARKETPLACErapidapi or apimarket, when both keys are set

Without a key the server still starts. The first tool call then explains where to get one.

3. Tools

toolwhat it does
convert_document(url=… | path=…, max_chars=20000)converts one document to Markdown; give a public URL, or a local file to upload

The format is detected from the content.

Every tool returns the API's JSON response.

  • When the marketplace reports it, quota_remaining is added: the requests left on your plan this month.
  • Errors are explained in plain words, with what to do next:
    • key refused, with the link to subscribe;
    • quota reached, with the plans;
    • input the API couldn't process, with the API's reason.

Privacy

  • Local files are read only when a tool is given their path. They are sent to the API for that one request.
  • The API processes inputs in memory and doesn't store them. See the privacy policy.
  • Your key is only sent to the marketplace you chose.

Limits

  • Local files up to 10 MB.
  • Markdown up to 500,000 characters.
  • The server needs Python 3.10+ (uv installs it for you).

Development

bash
uv venv && uv pip install -e ".[dev]".venv/bin/pytest # unit tests, no network; 100% coverage required.venv/bin/ruff check src tests scripts

scripts/e2e_stdio.py unfold runs the server over stdio, as a client would, and calls its tools against the real API. It needs RAPIDAPI_KEY or API_MARKET_KEY.

Licence

MIT. Unfold itself is a paid API with a free plan, run by Hybrid Forge Lab.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
