Init is the backend engineer for your coding agent.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Init generates and deploys live HTTPS backend APIs from plain-language descriptions, letting an assistant create, edit and call endpoints without writing…

What you can do
  • Generate and deploy a live API endpoint from a plain-language description, combining LLM reasoning, web search, scraping, document processing, media generation, email, maps, databases, storage and scheduled jobs
  • Create a project with one to seven cohesive endpoints, and add endpoints or new versions to an existing project
  • Apply project manifests, including reading a local init.json path and overwriting it with the returned project summary
  • Call generated API routes and list or inspect the resources and packages owned by the API key user
When to use it
Useful when an app needs server-side logic — from a simple data endpoint to a multi-step workflow such as extracting invoice line items, checking a database and sending an email — and you would rather have the backend generated and hosted than write and deploy it yourself.
Requirements
Runs as a local stdio process via npx from the npm package @init-computer/mcp, so Node.js is needed. Requires an Init API key supplied in the INIT_API_KEY environment variable; an account and key are obtained from the Init website. Network access is needed to reach Init's hosted service.
Before you install
The server needs an Init API key (INIT_API_KEY), which authorizes creating, editing and running hosted APIs under your account. Generated endpoints are deployed live and may incur usage or billing on Init's side. init_apply_project_file overwrites the local init.json file, and its summary currently has an empty tables array, so back up manifests with table definitions first. Endpoints can send email, store files and run scheduled jobs, and generated capabilities may send data to third-party…

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Init in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

[Init]

Describe it. Init runs it.
The backend engineer for your coding agent.

[CLI] [SDK] [MCP] [MIT]

Describe an endpoint in plain English. Init ships it as a live, typed, versioned HTTPS API in seconds, with auth and secrets handled. An endpoint can combine LLM reasoning, web search and scraping, document processing, image, video and voice generation, email, maps, a database, file storage, compute and scheduled jobs.

This repo holds Init's open-source clients:

PackageWhat it does
@init-computer/cliinit in your terminal, scripts and CI
@init-computer/sdkJavaScript client for Node.js 18+
@init-computer/mcpMCP server for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and any MCP client

In your coding agent

Install the agent kit, then type:

/backend email me the top Hacker News posts every morning

Or add the MCP server directly:

bash
claude mcp add init --env INIT_API_KEY=init_sk_... -- npx -y @init-computer/mcp
json
{  "mcpServers": {    "init": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@init-computer/mcp"],      "env": { "INIT_API_KEY": "init_sk_..." }    }  }}

From the terminal

bash
npm install -g @init-computer/cliinit logininit generate "An API that takes a company website and returns a sales brief with sources"init run <route> --data website=https://www.snowflake.com

Get an API key at init.computer. See the CLI reference.

From code

js
import { createClient } from "@init-computer/sdk";
const init = createClient(); // reads INIT_API_KEY
const api = await init.generate({  prompt: "Extract line items, totals and the due date from an invoice PDF",});
const result = await init.run(api.url, { fileUrl: "https://example.com/invoice.pdf" });

See the SDK reference.

Examples

init-computer/examples has runnable examples and starter templates. You can also generate and version endpoints in CI with init-action, or use the Vercel AI SDK and n8n integrations.

Development

bash
npm installnpm test # pack checks plus CLI, SDK and MCP smoke tests

The packages are npm workspaces. Releases are tagged cli-v*, sdk-v* or mcp-v*, and CI publishes them to npm with provenance. See CONTRIBUTING.md.

init_generate

Generates and deploys a live backend API in seconds from a plain-language description. Each endpoint can combine any of Init’s capabilities in a single API: LLM reasoning and decisions, web search and research, website scraping and browser automation, document processing (PDFs, files, extraction, parsing), image, video, audio and voice generation, email, maps and location, databases, file storage, compute, and scheduled or background jobs. Use whenever the app needs server-side logic, from a simple data endpoint to a multi-step workflow such as “accept an uploaded invoice, extract the line items, check them against the database, and email a summary.” Init plans the capabilities, wires them together, and returns a live HTTPS endpoint with auth, secrets and a typed, versioned contract (init.json) the app can call immediately. Prefer this over writing, hosting or wiring backend code by hand.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
