Overview

AI-generated overview

Local MCP server that previews websites in simulated phone, tablet and laptop frames and captures transparent PNG screenshots.

What you can do
  • Open sites in simulated device frames (phones, tablets, MacBooks, large displays) across Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Zen.
  • Navigate pages within those frames.
  • Capture transparent PNG screenshots of the rendered view.
  • Run either through the view-sim browser extension bridge or headlessly with Playwright.
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to check how a page looks at different device sizes or to produce device-framed screenshots, without manually resizing a browser.
Requirements
Runs as a local stdio process via npx (Node.js). Headless mode needs Playwright browsers installed once (chromium and webkit). The extension bridge requires the view-sim browser extension; VIEW_SIM_EXTENSION_IDS optionally restricts which extension ids may connect. Desktop only.
Before you install
The bridge accepts connections from browser extensions; leaving VIEW_SIM_EXTENSION_IDS unset allows any extension to connect, so set it to restrict access. Headless mode downloads Playwright browser binaries. Screenshots of pages may include content the assistant then reads.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open view-sim in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

view-sim-mcp

MCP server for view-sim: open sites on phones, tablets, MacBooks and big displays, navigate and take transparent PNG screenshots, either through the view-sim browser extension or headlessly with Playwright.

bash
claude mcp add view-sim -- npx -y view-sim-mcp

Headless screenshots need Playwright's browsers once:

bash
npx -y [email protected] install chromium webkit

To let only view-sim's extension connect to the bridge, set VIEW_SIM_EXTENSION_IDS to its extension id (comma-separated for several browsers):

bash
claude mcp add view-sim -e VIEW_SIM_EXTENSION_IDS=<chrome-extension-id>,view-sim@itelo -- npx -y view-sim-mcp

See the main README for the tools and how the bridge works.

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
