Overview

AI-generated overview

Local MCP server that drives headless Blender 5.2 to generate parametric mechanical parts, export glTF/STL assets and verify meshes.

What you can do
  • Generate parametric mechanical parts (gears, brackets, enclosures, drone frames, assemblies) from plain-English specs or JSON parameters via Blender's Python API
  • Export production meshes as glTF, GLB, STL or OBJ for 3D printing and web rendering
  • Build self-contained Three.js CAD viewer pages with orbit controls, wireframe toggle and exploded-view scrubbing
  • Audit exported meshes for non-manifold edges, zero-area faces and bounding-box dimensional tolerances
  • Run local self-check and diagnostic commands to verify the installed skill and repository contracts
When to use it
Useful when you want an AI coding agent to produce dimensionally accurate, reproducible mechanical 3D parts and printable or web-ready exports instead of freeform AI meshes. It suits parametric CAD-style work such as gears, housings and assemblies; it is not intended for organic sculpting, rigged game characters, sheet-metal dielines or 2D vector animation.
Requirements
Runs as a local stdio process on a desktop machine. Needs Blender 5.2 LTS with its Python API, Python 3 for the self-check scripts, and a git clone of the repository or the Claude Code plugin install. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are declared.
Before you install
Installation copies skill files into agent directories such as ~/.claude, ~/.codex, ~/.gemini and ~/.agents, and the README's uninstall step deletes those paths. The server writes generated scripts and asset files into your workspace. It is source-available under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0, not an open-source license, so review the terms before commercial use.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open design-os-3d-blender in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

DESIGN:OS 3D Blender Agent (design-os-3d-blender)

Parametric 3D mechanical parts generator, headless Blender Python (bpy) pipeline, and embedded Three.js CAD showcase engine.

Generate dimensionally accurate gears, enclosures, drone frames, and exploded mechanical assemblies from plain-English specs or JSON parameters, complete with glTF/STL exports and interactive browser inspection.

design-os-3d-blender is a free MCP server (Model Context Protocol, stdio) for Blender. Connect it to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any MCP client to model, render and verify parts in Blender 5.2 LTS. Free, nothing sold, source-available under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0.

Why this exists

Text-to-3D diffusion models produce melted, non-manifold blobs that cannot be 3D-printed, machined, or cleanly animated in web viewers. design-os-3d-blender drives Blender's Python API (bpy) and Three.js deterministically to produce crisp mechanical geometry and interactive CAD showcases.

Quickstart

1. Install the plugin or CLI

In Claude Code:

text
/plugin marketplace add jangtrinh/design-os-3d-blender/plugin install design-os-3d-blender@design-os-3d-blender

Or from your terminal (Codex, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, OpenCode, or standalone CLI):

bash
git clone https://github.com/jangtrinh/design-os-3d-blender.gitcd design-os-3d-blenderpython3 scripts/self_check.py

2. Ask in plain English

Open your project in your AI coding agent and describe what you need:

"Generate a parametric 24-tooth helical gear and mounting bracket in headless Blender and export glTF + STL artifacts."

"Build an interactive Three.js CAD viewer page with exploded-view scrubbing, wireframe toggle, and orthographic camera presets."

"Audit the exported mesh topology for non-manifold edges, zero-area faces, and bounding-box dimensional tolerances."

3. Verify your setup

bash
python3 scripts/self_check.py

What it makes

Every deliverable produced by design-os-3d-blender is backed by a deterministic verification gate rather than freehand AI guesswork.

How it works

  1. Intent Routing — Your AI agent matches your request against skills/design-os-3d-blender/SKILL.md frontmatter triggers.
  2. Progressive Context Loading — Only the entry-point SKILL.md router loads initially; detailed recipes and scripts load on demand.
  3. Deterministic Execution — Domain scripts and contracts execute locally with reproducible inputs and outputs.
  4. Gate Verification — scripts/self_check.py and domain verifiers (python3 scripts/self_check.py) validate the artifact before completion.
  5. Zero-Telemetry Delivery — Verified files are written directly to your workspace with zero external network calls.

Quality bar & Limitations

It's working if...

  • python3 scripts/self_check.py prints ok: design-os-3d-blender self-check passed (design-os-3d-blender) and exits 0.
  • python3 scripts/self_check.py passes with zero contract or test regressions.
  • Your AI coding agent loads skills/design-os-3d-blender/SKILL.md automatically when given any prompt from docs/cookbook.md.
  • Network traffic during execution remains zero (guaranteed by PRIVACY.md).

When not to use

  • Sheet-metal or paperboard folding dielines where 2D crease patterns govern topology (use design-os-origami).
  • Organic character sculpting or AAA rigged game characters requiring manual ZBrush artistry.
  • 2D vector UI motion walkthroughs (use design-os-svg-animation).
