Real satellite audio, spectrograms and provenance through MCP.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Gives an assistant tools to find public satellite radio observations, play short excerpts, measure audio, and draw spectrograms with provenance.

What you can do
A local Python server exposing eleven tools for exploring real radio recordings. It searches SatNOGS observation metadata, fetches up to 90 seconds of permitted audio as mono 16 kHz WAV, and computes peak/RMS, dominant frequency and spectral centroid. It renders Hann-window STFT spectrogram PNGs, compares recordings, exports Markdown evidence reports, and runs a fully offline synthetic demo. A one-call explore tool bundles search, excerpt, plot, measurements and credits.
When to use it
Use it when you want an assistant to investigate genuine radio observations conversationally: finding satellite passes with audio, listening to excerpts, interpreting spectrograms, or producing credited evidence reports. It also suits teaching about radio signals through the labeled synthetic demo. It is not a live telescope, an astrophysical classifier, or an alien-signal detector.
Requirements
Runs locally over stdio; the manifest declares no authentication, environment variables or headers. Installation uses uv/uvx and needs internet the first time; the demo then runs offline. Reports need a directory approved at startup via --report-dir or COSMIC_EARS_REPORT_DIR, and local audio outside managed artifacts must be opted in with --allow-file. No radio, account or paid service is required.
Before you install
It writes files: artifacts go to the OS user cache by default and expire after seven days under a 256 MiB budget, while reports persist in the approved directory. It fetches from third-party sources, so SatNOGS CC BY-SA 4.0 attribution and share-alike terms apply to distributed adaptations, and Radio JOVE clips are link-only with unknown reuse rights. Spectrograms are of demodulated audio, not calibrated RF, and loudness is not astronomical flux.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Cosmic Ears MCP in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Score

25% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

  • Tools listed15 pts

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
