Search Google News, get top stories and read articles. No API key or headless browser.
Overview
Scrapes Google News so an assistant can search articles, list top stories by country or topic, and read article text, with no API key required.
- What you can do
- Search news by keyword with timeframe, language and country, including Google operators like quotes, OR and site:
- List current top stories for a country and language, or for a Google News topic page
- Fetch an article URL and return its readable body text, title, byline and publish time
- Return each result with title, link, source, source URL and datetime, using the real publisher URL
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant needs current news coverage: tracking a company or product, summarizing a country's headlines, or reading a specific article found via search. It suits desktop MCP clients that can start a local process.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local stdio process started by the MCP client, installed via npx from the npm package google-news-scraper-mcp; Node.js 20.19 or later is needed for most clients (Claude Desktop bundles its own). No account or API key is required. Optionally set GOOGLE_NEWS_THIRD_PARTY_APIKEY for a SerpApi key and GOOGLE_NEWS_THIRD_PARTY_PRIMARY to choose which source is tried first. Network access to Google News and article pages is required.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Google News in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
📰 Google News MCP
Give any AI agent live news. This Model Context Protocol server lets Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients search Google News, read the top stories in any country, and pull the text of an article.
It's built on google-news-scraper, so there's no API key, no account and no headless browser. Results come with the real publisher URL rather than a Google redirect link.
Tools
Each article comes back as { title, link, source, sourceUrl, datetime }.
Setup
Your MCP client starts the server itself, so there's nothing to keep running.
Claude Desktop
Download google-news.mcpb and double-click it, or drag it into Settings → Extensions. Claude Desktop installs it with its own Node.js, so you don't need Node installed.
Claude Code
Or add the server directly with claude mcp add google-news -- npx -y google-news-scraper-mcp.
Cursor, Windsurf and most other clients
Requires Node.js 20.19 or later.
Add this to the client's MCP config (.cursor/mcp.json, claude_desktop_config.json, and so on):
VS Code
Optional: a fallback when Google blocks you
Google rate-limits busy IPs, which is common on cloud servers. If you have a SerpApi key, the server can fetch results through SerpApi's Google News API instead. Set these environment variables in your client's MCP config:
In Claude Desktop, enter the key in the extension's settings instead. Each SerpApi call uses one of your SerpApi searches.
Example prompts
- "What's the latest news on Nvidia from the past day?"
- "Summarise today's top stories in Germany, in English."
- "Find coverage of our product launch on techcrunch.com this month and read the most recent article."
Notes
- Google rate-limits bursts of requests from one IP. The scraper retries with backoff, but very heavy use can still get temporarily blocked. A third-party key keeps results coming.
get_article_textreads the page's HTML directly, so paywalled pages and sites that only render with JavaScript may return an error.
Privacy
The server collects and stores nothing. It sends your queries to Google News, or to SerpApi if you set a key, and fetches the article pages you ask it to read. See the privacy policy.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
