Overview

AI-generated overview

Build, check, install and debug widgets for the Xenon desktop dashboard, with SDK docs, runtime errors and tile screenshots.

What you can do
  • Check that Xenon is running and report its version, SDK version and dashboard state
  • Read the Widget SDK reference covering manifests, message protocol, data streams, actions, storage and sandbox rules
  • Generate a starter widget into a folder and run Xenon's pre-install checks on a widget package
  • Install or update a widget onto the dashboard and list the user's own widgets or export their files
  • Inspect runtime errors, blocked requests, permission status and resource use, and capture a screenshot of the widget tile
  • Produce a share code for one of the user's widgets along with Store review notes
When to use it
Useful when someone develops custom widgets for the Xenon dashboard and wants an assistant to scaffold, validate, install and debug them against the running app instead of switching between editor and dashboard.
Requirements
Runs as a local stdio process (npm package xenon-mcp) on a desktop machine; Xenon must be installed and running on the same computer. No authentication, environment variables or headers are declared. Screenshots are not available on Linux under Wayland.
Before you install
Installing or updating a widget writes files and puts it on the dashboard, and permissions it requests still need the person to approve them there. Share codes expose a widget to anyone who pastes them into Xenon. Widget code runs in a sandbox, so errors surface only as generic script errors unless wrapped in try/catch with console.error.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Xenon Widgets in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Tools

xenon_status

Check that Xenon is running on this computer and ready for widgets: its version, the Widget SDK version, whether community widgets are on and whether a dashboard is open. Call it first.

Takes no parameters.

sdk_reference

Read the Xenon Widget SDK reference: the manifest, the message protocol, data streams, actions, storage, sizing and the sandbox rules. With no section you get the table of contents. Read it before writing a widget.

Parameterssection

new_widget

Write a working starter widget (manifest, HTML, CSS, JS showing live CPU and memory) into a new or empty folder. Edit it from there, then install_widget.

Parametersidnamesizefolderrequiredoverwrite

check_widget

Run the checks Xenon runs before installing, without installing: the package rules, what the sandbox will refuse (inline scripts, remote code, hosts) and the Store's review notes.

Parametersidfolderrequired

install_widget

Install or update the widget from its folder put it on the dashboard and show its page (a new page when the one in view is full). Permissions it asks for still wait for the person to approve them on the dashboard. Then call widget_issues and widget_screenshot.

Parametersidfolderrequired

widget_issues

What went wrong in an installed widget while it ran: errors and console.error lines, requests the sandbox blocked, whether its permissions are approved, and how heavy it is. Errors thrown in widget code show as "Script error." because of the sandbox: wrap code in try/catch and console.error the message to see it.

Parametersidrequired

widget_screenshot

A picture of the widget's tile as it is on screen now. Anything on top of the dashboard shows too. Not available on Linux under Wayland.

Parametersidrequired

my_widgets

List the widgets the person made (not Store downloads). With an id and a folder, write that widget's files into the folder to keep working on it.

Parametersidfolderoverwrite

share_widget

A share code for one of the person's own widgets, which anyone can paste into Xenon, plus the Store review notes. To put it in the Store the person sends it from xenon-app.com/submit.
