Tools for the Takes Mac app: scripts, takes, edits and posts for talking-head videos

Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant write scripts, cut edits and draft social posts for talking-head videos in the Takes Mac app library.

What it does
Connects Claude Code to the Takes Mac app's video library, which is stored as plain folders under ~Movies/Takes. The assistant can write scripts and storyboards, cut and edit recorded takes, and draft posts for platforms such as LinkedIn, X, YouTube or Shorts. The app records and reviews the video, while the assistant reads and writes the same folders through the takes MCP server.
When to use it
Use it when you record talking-head videos on a Mac and want an assistant to handle scripting, editing and post drafting inside the same library. It suits creators who already use the Takes app and Claude Code and want to work from a terminal or chat panel.
Requirements
A Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later, and a Claude plan. The Takes app must be installed, and it adds the server and two skills to Claude Code on first launch. Optional: whisper for transcripts and a Gemini key for storyboard sketches, B-roll names and best cuts. The iPhone companion needs Xcode, an Apple ID and Tailscale.
Before you install
The server reads and writes your video library folders, so the assistant can change scripts, takes and posts. The optional Gemini key is stored in the app's settings and sends storyboard and editing requests to Gemini. The install script downloads and runs software, including ffmpeg and Claude Code, and signs you in to Claude; review it before running. The app is not notarized yet.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Takes for Mac in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

[Storyboard, record and post in Takes]

Takes shows each post the way LinkedIn, X, YouTube or Shorts will show it, so you review the real thing. No coding needed, no account, no usage data: your videos stay in folders on your Mac.

Install

Paste this in Terminal:

sh
curl -fsSL https://gettakes.app/install | bash

It installs Takes, ffmpeg and Claude Code, signs you in to Claude and opens Takes. Run it again to update. You can read the script first: it is 85 lines.

Other ways to install
  • Download: get Takes.dmg from Releases and drag Takes to Applications. Takes is not notarized yet, so open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway once (pictures of each step). Then click Finish setup in the sidebar.
  • From source: clone this repo, brew install ffmpeg, then ./build.sh install.

How a video goes

  1. Storyboard. Ask "storyboard my next video". Claude writes the script and sketches each shot.
  2. Record. Read off a teleprompter that follows your voice. Camera and screen record as two synced files. Star the take you keep.
  3. Post. Ask "cut my last take" and "write the posts". Review each draft as the platform shows it, leave comments on a frame or a line, and schedule it.

[The same video as a LinkedIn post, an X thread, a YouTube video and a Short]

On your iPhone

[Takes on iPhone: videos, files, storyboard and post]

Your videos, takes, storyboards and posts, from anywhere. Ask Takes from the phone too. Record a take on the phone and it lands in the session on your Mac. The phone reaches your Mac over Tailscale; nothing goes through a server of ours.

To install it you need Xcode and an Apple ID: TAKES_TEAM=<team id> ios/install.sh. With a free Apple ID, install it again every 7 days.

How it works

Your library is plain folders in ~/Movies/Takes. The app records into them, Claude Code reads and writes them through the takes MCP server, and the app updates when a file changes. On its first launch Takes adds the server and two skills (takes-storyboard, takes-video-edit) to Claude Code, so you can also ask from any terminal.

Good to know

  • Needs: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 15+ and a Claude plan.
  • Optional: whisper for transcripts. A Gemini key for storyboard sketches, B-roll names and best cuts: Settings › Gemini says what it adds and saves it.
  • Questions and ideas: Discussions. Takes does not take pull requests, so one person keeps it consistent. Forks are welcome.
  • The pictures are the real app on a made-up library.
