Read the crypto fear and greed index from alternative.me. No key required.
Overview
Lets an assistant read the crypto Fear and Greed Index from alternative.me, with no API key required.
- What you can do
- This local MCP server exposes the crypto Fear and Greed Index published by alternative.me, so an assistant can look up the current market sentiment reading on request. It is a small, single-purpose tool: it retrieves the index value rather than performing analysis, trading, or portfolio work. No tools are listed in the manifest, so the exact tool names and parameters are not documented here.
- When to use it
- Worth adding when you want an assistant to reference current crypto market sentiment in conversation, for example to contextualize a market discussion or check the prevailing Fear and Greed reading. It is not needed if you do not follow crypto markets or already have that data from another source.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local process on the user's machine, installed from the npm package fear-greed-mcp over stdio. Node.js and npm are needed to install and run it. No API key, environment variables, or headers are declared. Network access to alternative.me is required to fetch the index. Desktop only; not available as a web executable.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Fear Greed Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
