Use this MCP server to the Gopher protocol, browse gopherspace, the pre HTTP internet. Menus,...
Overview
A local MCP server that lets an assistant browse Gopher menus, read Gopher text files and run Veronica-2 searches across gopherspace.
- What you can do
- Open a Gopher menu on a host and list its typed items (directories, text files, search services, binaries)
- Read a plain text file (Gopher type 0) from a given host and selector
- Run a Veronica-2 search across gopherspace and get matching items
- Navigate gopherspace by chaining menus and selectors, with gopher.floodgap.com as the default host
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to explore the pre-web Gopher internet, read documents hosted on Gopher servers, or look up retro and archival material through Veronica search. It is a niche tool for gopherspace rather than general web browsing.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local process over stdio, installed from the npm package and started with Node.js. It opens raw TCP connections to Gopher servers on port 70, so outbound network access is needed. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are required.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Gopher Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
gopher mcp
An MCP server that speaks the Gopher protocol, the pre HTTP internet, still running since 1991.
Gopher is a text menu protocol: you open a menu, it lists typed items (directories, text files, search services), and you navigate deeper. This server is a raw TCP Gopher client (port 70), no HTTP, no scraping.
Why it's original
Nobody else has a Gopher client as an MCP tool. The AI can now surf gopherspace, Floodgap, SDF, Veronica search, and read documents that predate the web.

Usage
Example flow:
Default host is gopher.floodgap.com (Floodgap Systems, serving gopher since 1999, blocklist updated April 2026, ~81,000 Veronica matches indexed). All keyless, no auth.

Score
40% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declared10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
- Tools listed15 pts
Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
