Overview

AI-generated overview

Local MCP server that lets an assistant search MusicBrainz for artists, releases and recordings and look up artist details by MBID.

What you can do
  • Search artists in MusicBrainz by name
  • Search releases and recordings in the open music metadata database
  • Fetch details for a specific artist, including MBID-based lookups
  • All queries go through a client that identifies itself with a descriptive User Agent and paces requests at about one per second
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to look up music metadata — artist, release or recording information — without leaving the conversation, for example to verify names, MBIDs or discography details.
Requirements
Runs as a local process via the npm package @mrfentmen/musicbrainz-mcp over stdio; Node.js and npm are needed to install and build it. No API key, environment variables or headers are required. Network access to the MusicBrainz service is needed.
Before you install
Read-only lookups against a public community database; no credentials are requested. Requests are rate-limited to roughly one per second, so large batches of lookups will be slow. MusicBrainz data is community-maintained and may be incomplete or inaccurate.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Musicbrainz Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Score

40% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
